Saturday Tips For Cheltenham And Doncaster

Posted December 14, 2018 | By Tim @ Betting Gods

A mixed weather forecast could play havoc at Cheltenham and Doncaster on Saturday but, with only light rain forecast in the afternoon at both venues at the time of writing, I’m hopeful the ground won’t change to anything worse than good-to-soft from the good ground that was declared at both courses on Friday.

If that’s the case, both free tips for the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham should relish conditions and a chance to carry nice low-weights. There’s also a free tip for the International Hurdle at Cheltenham and a free tip for the Bet365 Gold Cup at Doncaster.

Cheltenham 1.55

Six of the last seven winners of the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup have carried less than 11-0, which could make it difficult for last month’s Betvictor Gold Cup one-two Baron Also and Frodon. Last year’s winner Guitar Pete, who is much better off at the weights after finishing in third behind those two rivals in the Betvictor Gold Cup, is much preferred this time, as he should be at his fittest now he’s got a couple of runs under his belt. His stable is also in amazing form having enjoyed doubles on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

However, I’ll also have to have a saver on Romain De Senam, who was also fancied for last year’s renewal and ran okay in fifth. Asked to carry 11-2 that day, he gets to carry joint bottom-weight this time and is 14lb better off with Guitar Pete this year. He’ll need the ground to remain good to have a chance of performing at his best, but the ground should be okay if only light rain hits the Cheltenham area on Saturday.

Western Ryder is officially the lowest-rated horse in the field in the International Hurdle but has always been highly-regarded by trainer Warren Greatrex. He was put firmly in his place at last season’s Cheltenham Festival by Summerville Boy, but it’s worth remembering he had earlier given 6lb and a beating to that horse and the useful Lalor here at Cheltenham at this time last year. Having pulled hard when well-fancied for this season’s Greatwood Hurdle on his seasonal appearance, the addition of first-time cheekpieces could bring about some improvement, whilst he’s also getting weight from all bar one of his rivals.

Doncaster 3.20

Hopefully, Doncaster will survive a morning inspection, and avoid anything heavier than light rain, as Go Conquer looks to have been found a very winnable race by his new connections. Now trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, who was in good form at Cheltenham on Friday, the formerly Jonjo O’Neill trained nine-year-old should like Doncaster providing the ground stays no worse than good to soft. He’s at his best when allowed to bowl along in front and use his accurate jumping, and he could have his rivals in trouble along way from home if on song.
