Royal Ascot Tips [Day 5]
It’s day five of Royal Ascot on Saturday (20 June), so check out our analysis and tips for the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
15:00 at Ascot Racecourse on 20th June
This Group 1 race over a mile for 3-year-olds is normally run on the Tuesday of Royal Ascot, but it has been moved to Saturday to give runners from the English 2,000 Guineas as much time as possible to recover from the first Classic of the season.
Arizona and Royal Dornoch finished well-beaten in the 2,000 Guineas and, while both could improve from their first runs of the season, it’s no surprise to see Ryan Moore aboard 2,000 Guineas runner-up Wichita runner-up this time.
Wichita was by far the best backed of the Aidan O’Brien horses at Newmarket and he ran a cracker to be just touched off by Kameko. But I’m not sure he’ll be as good on soft ground.
The same comment applies to Pinatubo, and last year’s champion 2-year-old will have his stamina tested here. The Charlie Appleby runners at Royal Ascot have also mainly disappointed this week.
Positive and Threat are the two horses that haven’t raced so far this season, but the worst run of Positive’s promising 2-year-old career came on soft ground. However, he did beat Kameko last year and he always looked like he may be a better 3-year-old.
Threat should stay this trip, but he’s yet to run beyond 7-furlongs and has yet to encounter soft ground. His 2-year-old form also leaves him with a bit to find, as he was beaten by Arizona.

10 runners are set to go to post for this Group 1 over 6-furlongs and the Irish raider Sceptical could be a rags-to-riches story. Goldolphin may be bemused after they let him go as an unraced 3-year-old for just £2,800 but he’s now won his last four races.
He faces some potentially interesting rivals that were all out of form when last seen but who could easily bounce back. Hello Youmzain, Dream Of Dreams, The Tin Man, and One Master have all shown decent form at a previous Royal Ascot Festival, but I’m willing to take a flyer on one at a bigger price.
