Royal Ascot Tips [Day 3]
Day three of Royal Ascot 2020 takes place on Thursday 18 June, so check out our analysis and tips for the Gold Cup and the Jersey Stakes.

The Jersey Stakes is a Group 3 race over 7-furlongs, and the 2020 renewal looks an interesting contest. It’s no surprise to see a horse trained by John Gosden and ridden by Frankie Dettori installed as favourite for a race at Royal Ascot, but King Leonidas needs to take another step forward after winning over a mile at Newmarket last time. The son of Kingman could easily do so, but he drops back in trip here.
Another interesting runner dropping back in trip is Monarch Of Egypt and that looks a positive move after he looked a non-stayer in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Whether he can produce his best just six-days and a ferry ride later, remains to be seen.

The Group 1 Gold Cup, also referred to as the Ascot Gold Cup, is the highlight of day three of the Royal Ascot meeting, and still considered by many purists to be the most prestigious race of the week.
Just eight runners are set to go to post for the 2020 Gold Cup, the smallest field for over a decade. Stradivarius should take some beating in his bid to record a hat-trick in the race, but he faces some new rivals with last year’s third Cross Counter the only other runner to have run in the Gold Cup before. He could easily prove the biggest threat to Stradivarius one more but hasn’t run to his best for a while.
Cross Counter’s trainer Charlie Appleby saddles a second runner this year in Moonlight Spirit, and he could be the stable’s number one with William Buick in the saddle. But the 4-year-old was only fourth in the Queen’s Vase at last year’s Royal Meeting and was also beaten by Technician on his final start last season.
If the ground were to ride soft by post time (not forecast), Technician may well prove the biggest threat to Stradivarius, judged on his staying wins on soft ground last season. But before those he had disappointed in the St Leger. A win for either Mekong, Withhold, Nayef Road, or Prince Of Arran would be an even bigger shock.
