Racing Tips For Saturday : Coral Eclipse Stakes
The Coral Eclipse Stakes is run annually at Sandown over 10-furlongs, and is named after Eclipse who was an 18th century equine star to whom many of the world’s top breeding lines trace back to.
It is traditionally the first clash of the generations, with the classic generation taking on the older horses in receipt of 11lb. However, the last 10 renewals show that the weight difference isn’t insurmountable as only two 3-year-olds have won in that time compared to eight older horses, who have also taken the last five renewals.
There are only 5 runners set to go to post this year, but it still promises to be a fantastic contest. here’s our analysis and big-race tip.
Golden Horn 2/5
This year’s Dante and Derby winner has looked really impressive in both his races this year, and his form has been boosted by Jack Hobbs, runner-up in both those races, who has since romped home in the Irish Derby. Rated 126.
The Grey Gatsby 4/1
Kevin Ryan’s stable star has finished runner-up to Solow and Free Eagle this year, though it is worth remembering that he beat last year’s Derby winner Australia in last year’s Irish Champion Stakes. That was at level-weights though and it remains to be seen whether he can give this year’s Derby winner 11lb. Rated 123, and the obvious alternative to Golden Horn.
Cougar Mountain 10/1
The most difficult horse in the line-up to weigh-up as prior to running third in the Queen Anne Stakes, behind Solow, his form didn’t give him any chance. Still got beat by Esoterique that day though and may have been flattered with the horse who finished behind him not running to their best. Rated 119.
Western Hymn 22/1
Three from three at the course, but the form of those group-3 victories leaves him with plenty to find. Rated 117.
Shouldn’t like the good to firm ground or the trip, but will probably pick-up decent prize money for finishing 5th. Rated 112.
Free Racing Tip
It’s really hard to get away from Golden Horn. He’s top-rated and, though the Derby probably took plenty out of him, he’s had longer to recover than both The Grey Gatsby and Cougar Mountain who had hard races at Royal Ascot. The value bet though is probably the forecast Golden Horn to beat The Grey Gatsby.
