Everything You Want to Know About Thurles
Since 1732, Thurles Racecourse has been considered an integral part of Irish national hunt horse racing as the ground is raceable except when the rainfall in County Tipperary has been of biblical proportions.
The track at Thurles is right-handed and measures about 10 furlongs. It tends to suit speedy types that can race prominently and handle undulations, as there are several uphill and downhill sections. The descent into the home straight is especially steep and closers only have two furlongs in the straight to catch the leaders.
Thurles is home to several high-profile races including January’s Grade 2 Kinloch Brae Chase which has been won by the likes of the champion chaser Newmill and Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Don Cossack.
Thurles also stages a card at the end of March that has six class one contests on it. The feature is the Pierce Molony Memorial Listed Novice Steeplechase which was won in 2018 by Castlegrace Paddy.
