Everything You Want to Know About Punchestown
Punchestown Racecourse was established in 1824 and is the jewel of the Irish National Hunt racing scene. It is widely considered to be Ireland’s version of Cheltenham and it stages a number of high-profile fixtures throughout the season, culminating in the Punchestown Festival which takes in April each season.
One major difference between Punchestown and Cheltenham is that the hurdles and chases courses are right-handed, but they are undulating and both have uphill finishes. Punchestown also has a cross-country course that presents horses with a number of different challenges including twists, turns, banks, and a variety of fences.
The Punchestown Festival is a special occasion, offering trainers, jockeys, and owners the chance to win 12 Grade 1 Races over five-days of excellent jumps racing. The highlights are the Punchestown Champion Hurdle and the Punchestown Gold Cup.
Other important races Punchestown Racecourse stages are November’s grade one Morgiana Hurdle and December’s grade one John Durkan Memorial Chase.
