Everything You Want to Know About Pontefract
Pontefract Racecourse was established in 1648, when the local miners flocked to afternoon meetings after they had finished their shifts down the mines. Those mines may have shut in 2002, but the locals still love to attend a mixture of flat racing meetings with fun themes such as the Flat Cap & Whippet Family Day, Abba Night & Beer Festival, and Ladies Day.
The course at Pontefract is left-handed and around two-miles long. It stages its very own series of marathon races and, as the last five-furlongs are uphill, stamina is required in abundance.
Highlights of the season include the Flying Fillies Stakes, the Silver Tankard Stakes, the Pipalong Stakes, and the Pomfret Stakes, four Listed Races that are often hotly contested affairs.
High-profile horses that have raced at Pontefract include Brown Panther who was a dual-winner here, whilst Convey, Custom Cut, and Mondialiste are others that have won big races. Notable fillies that have won here include Queen Kindly and Mince.
