Everything You Want to Know About Kelso
The current Kelso Racecourse opened in 1822, but horse racing has been taking place in this area of the Scottish Borders for over 300 years.
The course stages national hunt racing with horses asked to race left-handed. However, it’s the steep final climb to the winning line that Kelso is famous for and the complexion of races can change many times races during the long run from the final hurdle or fence.
The course stages a mix of fun meetings and quality cards, with the latter including December’s Scottish Borders Grand National Day. February is then time for the Morebattle Hurdle Day Meeting which also features the Ivan Straker Chase.
Kelso also stages its Premier Hurdle Day in March with the eponymous race being won by the likes of Clever Cookie in recent seasons. The Premier Chase is also run at this meeting and it was most famously won by Grand National winner Many Clouds.
