Everything You Want to Know About York
York Racecourse has been staging flat racing for nearly 300 years on land that is affectionately known as The Knavesmire. The course is regarded as one of the best in England, with sweeping bends and a long home-straight making it also one of the fairest.
It hosts many prestigious races, with the Musidora Stakes and the Dante Stakes being important trials for The Oaks and The Derby. These take place at York’s three-day Dante Meeting in May, as does the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup.
York’s biggest meeting is the four-day Ebor Meeting which takes place in mid-August. The highlights of the meeting include three Group 1 Races, which are the Nunthorpe Stakes over five-furlongs, the Yorkshire Oaks over 12-furlongs, and the Juddmonte International over 10-furlongs. All three races have been won by a host of equine stars. However, the biggest highlight is the Ebor Handicap which takes place over 14-furlongs and is Europe’s oldest handicap.
