Everything You Want to Know About Tampa Bay Downs
Tampa Bay Downs is the only Thoroughbred race track located on the west coast of Florida and is known as one of America’s oldest tracks.
Tampa Bay Downs first opened in 1926 and has since gone through several renovations. The racetrack races just over 90 days a year from the fall to the spring and in addition to its one-mile traditional dirt track, sports a 7/8th mile grass track with a 1/4th mile chute making it one of the most popular turf courses in the country.
While Tampa Bay Downs will never be confused with Belmont Park, Saratoga or Churchill Downs, it does play host to its own Kentucky Derby prep race – the Tampa Bay Derby which is run in early March – a bit earlier than most other Kentucky Derby prep races.
