Everything You Want to Know About Fair Grounds
Fair Grounds Race Course is America’s second oldest racetrack dating all the way back to 1852. Fair Grounds is located in New Orleans, Louisiana and consists of a one-mile dirt track and a seven-furlong turf oval. In addition to the grandstand and the clubhouse, an adjacent building has become a casino offering slot machine play to its patrons.
Fair Grounds races from the fall through the spring with just over 80 days in its racing season culminating with the Louisiana Derby – the state’s main prep race for the Kentucky Derby. While the Louisiana Derby has always been an important Kentucky Derby prep race, it became even more significant in 2010 when it was moved to the final Saturday in March and in 2011 it was given a purse boost to $1,000,000.
