Everything You Want to Know About Curragh
The Curragh is Ireland’s premier flat horse racing course and it is located in County Kildare, which is around 35km outside Dublin. Racing officially started here in 1741 and the Irish parliament declared the area a horse racing and training facility in 1868. The course stages 19 meetings a season in between May and October.
The course is right-handed and horseshoe shaped, with sweeping bends and a slight uphill run-in measuring three furlongs. There is also a straight course over which races from five furlongs to a mile take place.
The main two races over a mile are the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the Irish 1,000 Guineas, which normally take place at the end of May. The remaining Irish Classics also take place at The Curragh, with these being the Irish Derby, Irish Oaks, and the Irish St Leger. This is why The Curragh is affectionately known as the “Home of the Irish Classics.
