About Chester

Everything You Want to Know About Chester

The Roodee is the nickname of Chester Racecourse, which has been staging racing officially since 1539. It stages around 16 flat racing meetings each year, with its most famous meeting being the Boodles May Festival. This features a host of trials for The Derby and The Oaks, the third and fourth Classics of the season, as well as the Chester Cup.

The tight Chester track is different from most racecourses in the UK, as runners are turning left through the majority of the race until hitting the home straight which measures around two furlongs. This means it is often an advantage to be drawn low.

However, this bias does not stop many top trainers sending their runners to Chester including Aidan O’Brien and Sir Michael Stoute, with the latter using the Cheshire Oaks as a prep run for the brilliant dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Enable before she won the Oaks at Epsom.
