Everything You Want to Know About Cartmel
Cartmel Racecourse stages just nine national hunt race meetings a year but the Lake District locals and tourists flock to the fixtures which are staged at popular holiday times. These include the Whit Holiday Meeting, The June Meeting, The Barbeque Meeting, and the August Bank Holiday Meeting.
A fun atmosphere is encouraged, with visitors welcome to brings picnics and pitch gazebos if the sun shines. Cartmel Racecourse will even stage a Cliff Richard Concert after it’s June 28th fixture in 2019. A trip into the local village to pick up your Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding is also highly recommended.
Local history suggests the monks were staging racing near the local priory from as early as the 12th century, but this quirky woodland layout officially opened its gates in 1856. Front runners are often at an advantage as the course turns left for the majority of the four-furlong run-in and horses often delay their challenge until reaching the short home straight.
