Everything You Want to Know About Carlisle
Carlisle racecourse has been staging horse racing since the sixteenth century. In 1599, a trophy called “The Bells” was awarded to the winner of the Carlisle Bell, the course’s oldest race. The trophy is still awarded today and it is thought to be the oldest horse racing trophy still presented on an annual basis.
The Carlisle Bell Handicap now forms part of the Carlisle Bell and Cumberland Plate Day, a meeting which also features the Listed Eternal Stakes as well as those two competitive handicaps.
Carlisle Racecourse also stages National Hunt Racing, and Monet’s Garden and many Clouds are two famous horses to have raced there, whilst Waiting Patiently has won the Colin Parker Memorial Chase.
The courses at Carlisle are right-handed, but races over five and six furlongs are run on a straight course. The finish is one of the steepest in the UK and real depths of stamina can be required when the ground is riding soft or heavy.
