Ascot Racecourse was opened by Queen Anne is 1711 and is now universally considered to be the world’s premier dual-purpose racecourse. The Round course (measuring 14-furlongs) and the Old Mile Course are Ascot’s two flat-courses, and these are used to host a total of 13 Group 1 Races. Prestigious meetings include the five-day Royal Ascot Meeting in June, where highlights include the Queen Anne Stakes, the St James’s Palace Stakes, and the Ascot Gold Cup. Ascot also hosts Champions Day in October, and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes in August.
Ascot is also home to some high-quality jumps racing, with the Chase and Hurdles courses both featuring the famous Swinley Bottom turn. The courses tend to suit strong galloping types and it produces lots of course specialists. The Grade 1 highlights over jumps are the Long Walk Hurdle over three-miles in December and the Ascot Chase over 2 miles and 5 furlongs in February.
