About Aintree

Everything You Want to Know About Aintree

Aintree Racecourse held its first jumps race in 1836. Three years later, this iconic Merseyside racecourse staged the first edition of the Grand National which was won by a horse called Lottery. The world’s most famous race takes place over a variety of fences, with the most famous being The Chair, Canal Turn, and Becher’s Brook.

The Grand National is also now part of a traditional three-day festival which takes place in the first two weeks of April each season. Other highlights include Grade 1 races like the Aintree Hurdle, Aintree Bowl, and Melling Chase, with these taking place on Aintree’s Mildmay Course.

Several other races also take place over the Grand National fences, including The Becher Chase, The Topham Chase, The Foxhunters Chase, and the Grand Sefton Chase. Another race that usually attracts an excellent field is the Old Roan Chase, which has been won by equine stars like Kauto Star and Monet’s Garden.
