Our Ebor Jorvik Handicap Analysis [And Free Tip]

The Jorvik Handicap (Wednesday 15 May) is a notoriously tough handicap run over 1 mile 3 furlongs and 188 yards at York Racecourse. It is traditionally the opening race of the Dante Meeting at York and is regarded as a stepping stone to the Ebor Handicap.

Check out our trends, runner-by-runner guide and free tips for the 2019 Jorvik Handicap.

Jorvik Handicap 10-Year-Trends

The last 10 winners have all been aged either four or five and have been rated no higher than 98. Eight of the last 10 winners had also had at least one run that season before winning. Nine winners were drawn no lower than stall three and no higher than stall 12, whilst five of the last seven winners had won their previous race.

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute and jockey Ryan Moore have teamed up to win two of the last six editions, whilst seven winners were returned at single-figure odds.

Jorvik Handicap Runner-By-Runner Guide 2019

Red Galileo

It’s a long time since this eight-year-old won and he’ll do well to change that here off a mark of 105 from stall-18.

Last win came off a mark of 85 but, though he’s 20lb higher now, he did run two excellent races over further here at York last season. Could run well but he still looks vulnerable to potentially better handicapped horses.

Blakeney Point

Six-year-old who currently looks slightly too high in the ratings to win a handicap but isn’t good enough to win a group race. He also has a tough-looking draw in stall-17.

Byron Flyer

Older than ideal at the age of eight but rattled off a hat-trick of wins at the end of last season. He’s also only 2lb higher than for the last of those wins and ran well to be second on his only previous visit to York.

First Eleven

A mark of 104 looks higher than ideal for this four-year-old but he has to be respected on his defeat of last year’s Ebor Handicap winner Ghostwatch, who went on to win off a higher mark on his next start. He’s also well-drawn in stall-five but he’s not won on either of his other two seasonal debuts.

Sir Chauvelin

Seven-year-old who is still 5lb above his last winning mark and he’s been well-beaten twice already this season. Tough ask from stall-15.

Improving four-year-old that proved his stamina for today’s trip when winning at Kempton off a 2lb lower-mark last time. There’s a slight worry that he’s done most of his winning on turf on soft ground but his sire Frankel certainly handled faster ground. Drawn lower than ideal in stall one.

Four-year-old who was a very consistent performer last year in big handicaps, finishing sixth in the Ebor on his final start. He’s had wind surgery since, and is well-drawn, but he may need the run after 263 days off the track having put up his worst two appearances on his two seasonal debuts.

My Reward

Seven-year-old that is 3lb below his last winning mark but ran terribly on his seasonal debut. He’s also only placed once in four previous runs at York.

Four-year-old who is having just his third run for his current trainer after starting life with Aidan O’Brien. Potentially well-handicapped on a mark of 95 after splitting 110 and 108 rated horses last time in receipt of just 3lb. However, he may have been flattered in a small field and is drawn wider than ideal in stall-13.

Fujaira Prince

Five-year-old that raced just once at three and then won two races as a four-year-old. Smashed off the boards on his seasonal debut this year and could be a group horse in the making. Respected, but he still has questions to answer stepping up in class and distance, and he’s drawn lower than any of the last 10 winners in stall-2.

Twin Star

Five-year-old that won a class-3 when last seen on the flat but, despite having wind surgery since, he’s flopped in this class before.

Has been beaten three times off his current mark and a first-time visor will have to spark serious improvement form a tough-draw in stall-16.

Rare Groove

Well-drawn improving four-year-old but he’s done his winning at a lower grade and may be ideally suited by a longer trip having won over further last time.

Lightly-raced well-bred four-year-old who was well-beaten off a similar mark when last seen at York. However, he’s been transferred to Andrew Balding since that run and he and jockey Silvestre De Sousa have teamed-up for lots of winners already this season. Interesting from a low draw.

Perfect City

Three-time winner in France for previous trainer and it’s hard to know what to make of him on his debut for jumps-trainer Jonjo O’Neill. Jamie Spencer is an interesting jockey booking but he’ll need to be at his best to win from stall-14.

Crystal King

Frankel-sired four-year-old that looked useless on his first four starts but has found his confidence on his last two starts off low-marks in handicaps. He won a decent race cosily last time and gets in on a handy mark at the foot of the weights for Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore.

Stealth Fighter

Belied his breeding when proving suited by stepping up to 10-furlongs last time to win a weak race on the all-weather. Hard to know if he’ll stay the extra two-furlongs here today, but respected from stall-six for a stable that do well at York.

Jorvik Handicap Verdict 2019

Fujaira Prince and Crystal King both look ideal stats-fits for the Jorvik Handicap. Fujaira Prince is respected as his connections won the 2016 edition.

However, at the prices, Crystal King is preferred as dual-winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute has not had a runner in the race in the last three-years and it looks significant that Ryan Moore rides this well-bred four-year-old here.
