The Open Sud De France returns to the Arena in Montpellier, the host location since 2010, where it is played on indoor hard-courts. It is one of a trio of ATP World Tour 250 Series events held in France, with the other two being the Open de Moselle and the Open 13.
It’s a tournament that French-players take very seriously, and 7 of the last 10 winners, and 8 of the last 10 runner-ups have been French.
Reigning Champion Richard Gasquet is the star attraction this week as he bids for a hat-trick of wins, and a fourth Open Sud De France Title in 5 years, whilst French favourite Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Quentin Halys, Benoit Paire, Jeremy Chardy, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Pierre-Hughes Herbert complete the French Challenge.
Open Sud De France Betting
Jo-Wilfed Tsonga 7/2. Marin Cilic, 4/1, Richard Gasquet 9/2, Alexander Zverev 9/2, Jeremy Chardy 40/1, Benoit Paire 50/1, Pierre-Hughes Herbert 80/1, Quentin Halys 100/1, Paul-Henri Mathieu 125/1
Number-1 seed Marin Cilic heads the First-Quarter, but he looks potentially vulnerable in a lowly ATP 250 Event for which he has no obvious reason to be fully-motivated to win. Benoit Paire could be capable of a surprise given he only trails Cilic 2-1 in head-to-heads, and has taken a set off the Croatian both times he’s lost to him.
However, even if Cilic makes it to the semi-finals, there’s a fair chance his semi-final opponent could be tournament specialist Richard Gasquet. The two are 2-2 in head-to-heads and Cilic has won the last 2, but Gasquet looks assured to have the greater motivation.
The Third-Quarter should be the mercy of rapidly improving youngster Alexander Zverev, however he lost his only previous match with potential last-16 opponent Coric, who in turn may be vulnerable to another motivated Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, the fourth-quarter should go the way of Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, though Fernando Verdasco has the ability to pose a threat to the number-2 seed and tournament favourite having beaten him twice in 6 previous matches. It’s also worth noting that Tsonga, despite the domination by Frenchmen, hasn’t featured in the final here before.
Open Sud De France Tennis Preview
The field contains 3 proven high-class winners in Marin Cilic, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and Richard Gasquet, whilst German teenager Alexander Zverev has all the potential in the world and a youthful desire to succeed. However, it’s hard to ignore the French-Factor, and Gasquet’s previous winning form here means he has to be he tip.
