Mayweather V McGregor; Could The Bookies Lose Out?
Published on 22/08/17
The Sporting mega-event that is the boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor has already seen large sums of cash being bet on by punters. It is set to be the blockbuster fight of the year, overshadowing another massive boxing match, Canelo vs Golovkin.
It is to be believed that this mega-money fight will only have the Grand National being bet on more throughout the entire year of 2017.
The fight will take place this Saturday night, with UFC star Conor Mcgregor fancying his chances at taking over boxing by beating former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather. This will be Conor’s very first fight in the infamous square circle too.
McGregor is heading into this fight, and rightly so, as a massive underdog, but sports fans have already staked large sums of cash onto the UFC champion.
Ladbrokes, speaking about the fight, have stated that: “We’ve never known a boxing match like it, turnover is through the roof and it’s testament to the fight that only the Grand National will see more wagers placed on one event this year.”
They further add: “We can’t give Mayweather away for love or money, and punters are firmly in the McGregor camp whatever the odds on offer.”
With this in mind, a win for McGregor would be a disastrous outcome for the bookies. A victory over Mayweather would cost bookies, globally, a sum of £250million.
A spokeswoman for betting giant, William Hill, said: “We fear a McGregor win because people are backing him like he can’t lose,”
“Around the world bookmakers are looking at taking around £100m which will far surpass the turnover of any fight before but the book is so one-sided that should McGregor win, the industry will end up handing over £250m to punters who have backed him.”
