A lucky punter won over £140,000 on horse racing last weekend, despite staking just £8. The Maths teacher, from Paisley in Scotland, scooped the massive success after cashing in on a Tote Scoop6 line at Betfred, with the 45-year-old picking winners at Market Rasen, Newbury and Newmarket over the weekend. The mother of three has since stated:
“I took an interest in the Scoop6 after reading about someone winning it and having been doing it every Saturday for four years. I usually only bet £2 but was confident this weekend so bet £8.”
“My winning formula? Well I look at the trainers and see which jockeys they have chosen because they usually put their best jockeys on the horses they think have the best chance. I was at home on Saturday afternoon and on this occasion, wasn’t too busy so watched the first race – John Constable winning the 2.10 at Market Rasen.”
“In the last race, the 3.35 at Newbury it was dramatic but was eventually won by my choice Bengali Boys at 12/1.There were three groups of horses and at first I couldn’t see him – and then all of a sudden Bengali Boys came through to win quite easily.”
“My husband, who was by now watching the racing with me, was like me gobsmacked.”
Having placed her bets at a local Betfred betting shop, the punter added:
“We celebrated with a bottle of champagne we bought on the way back from Betfred where we went soon after the last race to tell them we had won…and won big.
“My husband has no interest in racing and is always saying half-jokingly ‘oh no you’ve not got the racing on the TV again have you?’
“He never asks me to turn it off, he wouldn’t dare! He’s laughing about it now. It’s all a bit of a daze. We haven’t really thought through what we are going to do with all this money which is a life-changing amount.”
“We will definitely be going on a good holiday, somewhere hot like the Caribbean perhaps. There are also lots of places I want to see in France and paying off the mortgage is something for us to consider.”
The bettors would have been happy to take away winnings of just over £40,000 from her initial bet, however her decision to put the £8 wager on at her local Betfred shop near Glasgow, meant that she more than doubled her winnings thanks to a £100,000 win in the “Fred fillip”, which is only available if there is a single winner.
Included in the punters five winners were John Constable, the 4/1 favourite at Market Rasen, who was offered odds of 4/1, 7/1 God Given at Newmarket, 3/1 favourite, Magical Memory, at Newbury, Alcada, who was 9/1to win at Market Rasen, and finally 12/1 shot Bengali Boys.
For the second Scoop6 race, the customer had plumped for Spark Plug, who was eventually withdrawn from the 2.25 at Newbury due to heavy rain. However, due to the rules of the bet, she was then automatically given race favourite, Mount Logan.
However, when this horse was also withdrawn early on, she was handed over to What About Carlo, who never looked like being beaten.
Despite bookmakers not normally celebrating such victories, Betfred boss Fred Done had this to say:
“To win £140,924 already from just a £8 stake is fantastic, and what this bet is all about”
