The Lonsdale Cup (Friday 2.30) is a Group-2 race run over 2-miles and 88 yards at York. The race was given Group-2 status in 2004, but the distance was increased to its current length only in 2007. Since then, the race has been won by four 4-year-olds, three 5-year-olds and one 6-year-old, whilst Pat Smullen is the only jockey with a ride that has previously ridden the winner.
7 Runners are set to go to post for the 2016 Lonsdale Cup.
The race has been won twice before by 8-year-olds, and Clever Cookie is very popular on the Knavesmire having won 4 of his 8 starts here, including this year’s Group-2 Yorkshire Cup over 14-furlongs. Had both Curbyourenthusiam and Suegioo behind that day, but was only fourth in last year’s renewal.
Has been second in both his starts at York, and should be suited to racing over two-miles here judging on the way he was closing on Clever Cookie over 2-furlongs shorter here earlier this season. Ran poorly in the Goodwood Cup since, but never got in therace there and could easily bounce back.
Excellent fourth off top-weight in the 2014 Ebor is his only run here, but that’s enough to suggest last year’s Doncaster Cup winner will go close here after running into form with a second in the Goodwood Cup last time. His stable are also very much in form.
Quest For More
Placed in all three handicap runs here, but finished only sixth in this year’s Goodwood Cup, after finishing a close second the year before. Could run well, but overall form suggests he’ll find one or two too good.
Third in last year’s Ebor, but was well behind Pallasator the year before, despite getting weight, which he doesn’t here. Also generally below this class, and a tough ask.
Trip To Paris
The 2014 Chester Cup and Ascot Gold Cup winner was only fifth last year, but had endured a tough season and had to carry a 4lb penalty. He was then freshened-up before finishing fourth in the Melbourne Cup, and ran a remarkable race when third over 10-furlongs on his seasonal comeback. Could easily win, though connections may well be plotting their way back to the Melbourne Cup.
Excellent fourth in the Goodwod Cup last time, and proved he handles the course when second in last year’s Ebor. Had a 7lb claimer on that day, so has a few pound to find with the principals, but not ruled out for last year’s winning trainer.
Lonsdale Cup Summary
An excellent renewal, and all but Suegioo have chances. However, whilst Trip To Paris is feared most, Pallasator is the pick as his run in the Goodwood Cup looks to be the best piece of form on offer, and his stable remain in red-hot form.
