The Vodafone Arena, Istanbul, Turkey is the venue for the 2019 UEFA Super Cup (Wednesday 14 August, 8.00pm). The annual clash between last year’s Champions League and Europa League winners is an all-English affair that sees Liverpool take on Chelsea.
It’s no surprise to see Liverpool installed as the odds-on favourites to win in 90-minutes. Liverpool coasted to victory in their opening Premier League match against Norwich after taking a 4-0 lead at half-time, whilst Chelsea stumbled to a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford as Frank Lampard was made to suffer on his debut as Chelsea manager.
Manchester United may be much better than Norwich, but Liverpool are at least the equals of Ole Solskjaer’s side. That means Lampard’s baptism of fire is likely to continue if Liverpool take winning a second big European Trophy in just a few months seriously. There is an argument they might not, having taken no interest in either the FA Cup or the League Cup last season, but the gut-feeling is Jurgen Klopp will think the Super Cup will look good in the trophy cabinet at Anfield.
But it was Chelsea that knocked Liverpool out of the League Cup last season, whilst they also drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. Liverpool were slightly the better team that day, enjoying 52% of the possession and 13 shots to Chelsea’s 10.
Liverpool were much more dominant at home in the League, winning 2-0 after enjoying 61% of the possession and having 15 shots to Chelsea’s six. That improved performance coincided with Liverpool’s excellent end-of-season run, whilst the quality of Chelsea’s league performances slipped towards the end of the season.
Since then, neither team has made any major signings. But whilst Jurgen Klopp is happy with his squad, Chelsea have lost their main match winner Eden Hazard, and Frank Lampard hasn’t been able to bring any new quality players in because of Chelsea’s buying ban.
There may not be too much between the two sides in midfield but Liverpool look stronger in defence and attack. It’s hard to see Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud troubling Van Dijk and Gomez, but the likes of Salah, Origi, Mane, and Firmino should be able to breach the Chelsea defence. That’s why Liverpool to win to nil looks the best bet for the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.
If you don’t fancy taking slight odds against about any of Liverpool’s strikers scoring at anytime during the UEFA Super Cup, you might want to consider backing Virgil Van Dijk at a much bigger price. Van Dijk may be a rock at the back but he’s also becoming a potent attacking weapon for Liverpool having scored seven goals in his last 23 games.
Van Dijk also scored three goals on Liverpool’s forays into Europe, scoring against Bayern Munich and Porto in the Champions League and Borussia Dortmund in the International Champions Cup. He’s as big as 15/2 to score at anytime and that looks amazing value against a Chelsea defence that let in four goals on Sunday.
