Manchester City’s victory over derby-rivals Manchester United last night means Liverpool can’t afford to drop any points against Sunderland at Anfield this evening.
Liverpool are a best priced 2/11 to emerge victorious which, whilst about right, is hard to get enthusiastic about – and trying to pick the correct score looks a better bet.
Liverpool have managed to score three goals or more in four of their last five Premiership games and eight of their last twelve, whilst Sunderland have failed to score in their last three games. With 3-0 Liverpool only priced up at 7/1, it looks worth taking a chance on 4-0 (10/1), 5-0 (18/1) and 6-0 (33/1).
Liverpool to win 4-0 10/1
Liverpool to win 5-0 18/1
Liverpool to win 6-0 33/1
Horse Racing – Exeter – 4.10pm
The Higos Insurance Services Platinum Handicap Hurdle at Exeter offers today’s best betting opportunity in the shape of Rugged Jack. Victor Dartnall’s charge has won two of his last three races, both here, and seemed to resent the first-time tongue-tie when unplaced at Huntingdon in-between. The 7-year-old looks to be improving and, despite a 7lb rise in the handicap for his latest victory, he can race off the same mark thanks to jockey Matthew Hampton’s 7lb claim. There’s also a chance that the extra half-mile of this race will bring about further improvement – and an each-way bet at 4/1 or better looks a sensible play.
Rugged Jack each-way 4/1 or better
Golf – PGA Tour – Valero Texas Open (Sunday – Thursday)
TPC San Antonio has hosted the event since 2010 in which time it has been won by Adam Scott, Brendan Steele, Ben Curtis and Martin Laird; a foursome that suggests that just about any golfer in the field has a chance this week – which is why I’m siding with two 40/1 shots in Kevin Na and Kevin Chappel.
Playing partly on a medical exemption, Na has secured his playing rights for next year already courtesy of four top-ten finishes – and he can now concentrate on getting his second PGA Tour victory. His short game has always been excellent and recent improvements in his tee-to-green game make a perfect recipe for a good performance here.
Meanwhile, Chappel is capable of playing difficult courses well as he’s shown at Congressional in the US Open and at Muirfield Village. He’s also finished 2nd and 15th in his two visits here.
Kevin Na each-way 40/1
Kevin Chappel each-way 40/1
Golf – Eurasia Cup – (Sunday-Thursday)
The inaugural event of this Ryder Cup-like match sees Europe take on Asia. Europe looks the stronger side and there’s bound to be many big-hitters lumping on at 1/2. However, the value seems to be in trying to choose the player who will score the most points for each team. My choices are Thorbjorn Olesen (11/1) for Europe and Kiradech Aphibarnrat (5/1) for Asia. Back them both as each-way singles and in an each-way double.
