League Cup Final Statistics
As Liverpool and Manchester City prepare to do battle for the League Cup (Sunday 28th February, 4.30pm), it’s time to take a look at some statistics in a bid to unearth the winner. Therefore, we’re taking a look at both side’s League Cup Records, Current Form, Head-To-Heads, and Previous Cup Clashes.
League Cup Records
Liverpool have won the League Cup a record 8 times, in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1995, 2001, 2003 and 2012. They’ve also been beaten finalists on three occasions.
Manchester City have won the League Cup three times, including most recently in 2014, with their previous victories coming in 1970 and 1976. They were also beaten finalists in 1974.
Man City looked sublime in their Champions League clash with Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday night, and the return of defender and captain Vincent Kompany just seemed to gel Manchester City together, making them look much more like the side that has entertained so much over the last few seasons. However, as Dynamo Kiev probably aren’t any better than an average Premier League side, it’s well worth remembering that City have lost their last two home Premier League games against Spurs and Leicester.
Liverpool have also been recently buoyed by the return of talisman striker Daniel Sturridge who clicked instantly back into gear against an admittedly woeful Aston Villa side. However he’ll need to have a Vincent Kompany type effect on Liverpool, whose form has been all over the place recently with defeats to Leicester and Manchester United, draws against Arsenal and Sunderland, and a 5-4 victory over Norwich.
Between the 2009/10 and 2014/15 seasons, the 10 matches between the two teams produced 4 draws and 3 home wins for each team. However, Liverpool will take great confidence from the fact that they hammered City 4-1 away from home this season.
Previous Cup Clashes
Liverpool will also take further confidence from their previous cup clashes with Manchester City, as they emerged victorious 3-2 on aggregate after 2 legs in 2012 after winning away 1-0, then holding City to a 2-2 at home.
The pair have also clashed 3 times in the FA Cup, and Liverpool have triumphed on all 3 occasions, winning 1-0 away in 2003, 4-2 at home in 2002, and 4-0 away in 1988.
Both teams will be up for the cup but, as Manchester City are still very much in contention for both the Premier League and the Champions League, a League Cup victory may well mean more to the Liverpool players. Liverpool will also take great confidence from their strong cup record against their opponents, and the fact they beat them earlier in the season – all of which makes them look the value bet.
