The 2019 Champions League Final (Saturday 1 June, 8 p.m.) brings down the curtain on the 2018/19 football season, and only Tottenham and Liverpool are left with a chance to write their names in European footballing history.
It seemed an unlikely final when both teams lost their first legs in the semi-finals, but both teams produced amazing fightbacks. Liverpool were unbelievable when beating Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield to overcome a 3-0 deficit, whilst even the most faithful Spurs fans must have given up when they trailed Ajax 3-0 on aggregate with just 45-minutes to go in Holland.
However, here we are and the fans that make the journey to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid on Saturday night can only hope the two teams make the final every bit as exciting. Check out our stats, analysis, and free tip for the 2019 Champions League Final.
If beating Barcelona 4-0 didn’t showcase Liverpool’s form, then how about the fact they also won their last nine Premier League games to amass the third highest Premier League points total in history only for winners Manchester City to achieve the second-highest total.
They also knocked out another Champions League giant in Bayern Munich, dismissed Porto, and scrapped their way out of a tough group containing Paris St Germain and Napoli.
Tottenham’s European campaign was also impressive, as they overcame Manchester City over two-legs, as well as beating Borussia Dortmund who were many pundits’ idea of the best outsiders. They also got a result in Barcelona when their backs were firmly against the wall.
However, whilst Liverpool managed to maintain top form in the Premier League, Tottenham’s Premier League challenge fell apart and they finished the season with just three wins in their last 12 games.
Tottenham vs Liverpool Head To Heads
The last nine games between the two sides have produced one Tottenham win, four Liverpool wins, and four draws, but it is Liverpool that have managed to come out on top both times in the Premier League this season. Liverpool also won the last time the two teams met in a one-legged cup game.
Interestingly, both teams have scored in seven of their last eight matches. Despite that, most of the matches haven’t been big scoring games, with the results being 2-1, 2-1, 2-2, 4-1, 2-1, 2-0, 1-1, and 1-1.
Tottenham vs Liverpool Team News
Tottenham are set to welcome back Harry Kane after he missed the last few weeks of the season and it will be interesting to see whether Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino starts with him or brings him on later in the game.
Pochettino could also welcome back Harry Winks, Danny Rose, Jan Vertonghen, and Davinson Sanchez.
Liverpool should also be near full fitness with Robert Firmino and Andrew Robertson expected to be fully fit. Naby Keita is reportedly definitely out, and Klopp is likely to hand semi-final substitute hero Wijnaldum a spot in the starting line-up.
2019 Champions League Verdict
Neither Tottenham or Liverpool have picked up any trophies recently, and both Mauricio Pochettino and Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to land the big one.
Tottenham haven’t won a trophy since the 2008 League Cup, whilst Liverpool’s last bit of silverware also came in that competition in 2012.
Tottenham have definitely bottled it recently on more than one occasion when in promising positions in both cup competitions and the Premier League. However, Jurgen Klopp also needs to get a big monkey off his back having been beaten in the last six finals that the teams he’s managed have played in.
That means it could just be worth concentrating on current form. If that’s the case, Liverpool are fancied to come out on top. They’re a best-priced 10/11 to win in 90-minutes, but prices of around 5/2 or better about Liverpool winning and both teams scoring make the most appeal.
If you’re looking for an anytime goalscorer bet, Robert Firmino makes the most appeal at around 2/1 after scoring in both of Liverpool’s Premier League clashes with Tottenham this season.
