Our Irish 1,000 Guineas Preview [Plus FREE Tip]

The Irish 1,000 Guineas (Sunday 25 May, 4.25) is the second classic of the Irish flat racing season. It is run at The Curragh over one mile and has been won by star fillies like Kooyonga, Marling, Ridgewood Pearl, Attraction, Finsceal Beo, Winter, and Alpha Centauri.

Check out trends, runner-by-runner guide, and free tip for the 2019 Irish 1,000 Guineas.

Irish 1,000 Guineas 10-Year-Trends

The last nine winners of the Irish 1,000 Guineas had enjoyed a prep run between 11 and 43 days earlier, but only three winners had won their previous race.

The draw has had little effect with winners drawn as low as stall-two and as high as stall-15, and there are only 10 runners set to go to post this year.

Aidan O’Brien has trained three winners, with Ryan Moore riding two of them. However, plenty of outsiders have won this race in the last decade, with five winners returned between 9/1 and 16/1.

Irish 1,000 Guineas Runner-By-Runner Guide 2019

Coral Beach

Winning a Group 3 on her last of 13 starts as a two-year-old is her career high but that looked a weak contest on paper. She also disappointed on her seasonal debut in France in Group 1 company and, though heavy ground was a possible excuse, she was 25/1 that day and would be a surprise winner here for Aidan O’Brien.

Dean Street Doll

Broke her duck in maiden company on just her second start and ran creditably when runner-up last time. However, she only just finished in front of a 97-rated rival there and needs to take another step forward to figure here.

English-raider that is trained by Kevin Ryan and she definitely deserves to take her chance. She won her first two starts as a two-year-old and then a cracking race to be runner-up to Newspaperofrecord at the Breeders’ Cup. Ran creditably when third in a Group 1 on heavy ground on her seasonal comeback and has got at least an each-way chance.

Won four of her six career starts to date and was far from disgraced with Frankie Dettori in the saddle when fifth in the English 1,000 Guineas. Jockey bookings here suggest she’s not at the top of the Aidan O’Brien pecking order, but she’s won her only previous start at the Curragh and is tough enough to win if good enough.

Foxtrot Liv

Finished 2½ lengths behind Hermosa on her final start as a two-year-old but, despite winning a soft race last time out, she was beaten in a Group 3 race in between. That suggests she hasn’t found the improvement to beat Hermosa this time and is likely to find several of her rivals too good.

Finished second in the Fillies Mile at Newmarket as a two-year-old, but jockey bookings suggested she was only the third or fourth in the Aidan O’Brien pecking order in the English 2,000 Guineas. However, there was plenty of money around for her in the morning at 20/1 and she was sent-off at 14/1 before Wayne Lordan took her to the front and repelled all challengers. There’s no obvious reason why any of her re-opposing rivals should beat her here but stranger things have happened.

Won the Fillies Mile as a Two-year-old and there was plenty of money around for her for the English 1,000 Guineas. However, she could only finish eighth there and Donnacha O’Brien rides one of his dad’s horses this time around rather than his brother’s. It’s also worrying that her worst start last year was at The Curragh.

Just Wonderful

Won a Group 2 and a Group 3 at two but finished around one-length behind East when she was fourth at the Breeders’ Cup. Ryan Moore opted to ride her in the 1,000 Guineas but, having not been overly strong in the market, she ran okay to finish sixth away from the main action. Moore has now switched to Hermosa, with Donnacha O’Brien riding this filly, who is a two-time course winner from four starts here.

Pretty Pollyanna

Put up some stylish performances as a two-year-old over six-furlongs and just didn’t seem to quite see out the mile when beaten by Iridessa and Hermosa in the Fillies Mile. However, she could be a stronger stayer this year, if ready to go out first out under Frankie Dettori for the first time. The stable of Michael Bell is also flying at the moment and she has to have a chance, despite the lack of a prep run.

Looked very good when winning the Nell Gwyn and didn’t get the clearest of runs behind Hermosa when a strong fancy for the English 1,000 Guineas. The stable of Roger Varian remains in top-form and, as there could still be plenty of improvement to come, it would be no great surprise if she took this on just her fourth career start.

Irish 1,000 Guineas Summary 2019

There isn’t much between a sextet of these on a variety of form-lines and any of Hermosa, Iridessa, Just Wonderful, Qabala, East, or Pretty Pollyanna could win. The latter is begrudgingly passed over, because she hasn’t had a prep run. However, as there have been plenty of big-priced winners of the Irish 1,000 Guineas, East could be worth chancing each-way having run so well at the Breeders’ Cup last year.
