England may still be licking their wounds after a 4-0 pummelling in their test series with India, but they’ll be looking for revenge as they move onto the 3 match ODI series between the two sides, with the first match starting in Pune on Sunday 15th January.
India – England ODI Series Betting: India 1/2, England 2/1
It’s hardly surprising that the bookies have made India solid favourites at 1/2, though whether England deserve to be four-times bigger at 2/1 is open to debate. There’s no doubt India have the better test team, with bowlers who can set a field to take wickets as batsman aim to stay at the crease for as long as possible, and batsmen who have the quality to take their time to build an innings when the emphasis is not on scoring as quickly as possible as in ODI Matches.
However, the best teams don’t always win ODI’s as the limited-over nature of such battles lend themselves to a high-percentage of heroic luck when it comes to batting.
Despite their test match dominance, India’s ODI Team also have an air of vulnerability. Sure, they may have won 12 of their last 14 ODI Home Series, but the likes of New Zealand and the West Indies both won 2 matches in their recent 5-match series against them.
England have also been boosted by the announcement that Joe Root has made himself available for the series after his wife gave birth to their first child without complications – and having the proven match winner in the side has definitely boosted their chances. Not that England are short in the batting department, and it’s that depth that allows them to put big match-winning numbers on the board in this type of cricket. England may not win – but they do look the value in what is just a 3-match series.

There will also be plenty of activity on the correct score market, and the bookies have again priced this up as though India are certain to win the series.
India – England ODI Series Correct Score Betting: India 2-1 11/8, India 3-0 13/5, England 2-1 5/2, England 3-0 14/1.
There’s probably a certain amount of jingoism attached in being interested in backing England to win 3-0 but, whilst that’s tempting, the 2-1 score-line may well be better value. That’s because winning or losing the toss could make a massive difference to England’s chances in each test, as they’ve proven themselves much better when chasing down the sort of totals that will be scored in the series.
Indeed, when amassing totals of around 300 or more in the first innings, England have succumbed to opponents an amazing 5-times. Meanwhile, India have lost just two of the seven games in which they’ve batted first and scored such a total. England look more dependent on winning the toss and batting second – so let’s just hope they win two tosses.
