What Are Asian Handicaps?
The best place to start this guide is a brief description of Asian handicaps. To put it simply, it’s when you bet on a football team but give them a handicap. This handicap can either be positive or negative and will often boost the value of a bet. For example, you can bet on teams to have a goal deficit or a head start. This is often displayed by figures like -1.5 or +2.5, etc.
So, you could bet on Chelsea vs. Hull but with Chelsea to have a -1.5 handicap. This means that you’re betting on them to win the game with that handicap in place. So, if they win by one goal, you don’t win your bet. However, if they win by two or more goals, then you win the bet. Likewise, you may choose to bet on Hull to win with a handicap of +1.5. This means that they can still lose by one goal and you’ll win your bet.
Types Of Football Asian Handicap
There are plenty of types of Asian handicap for any football match you bet on. I’ve already mentioned a few figures here, and you will usually get a broad choice of half goal handicaps. But, along with the half handicaps, you also have round number handicaps that differ slightly. Let’s say you bet on Chelsea to win with a handicap of -1. If they only win by 1 goal, then the handicap is equaled, and you get your stake back, you don’t win or lose.
Then, there is something known as the 0 Asian handicap which differs from the rest. Again, let’s say you’re betting on Chelsea to win but with a handicap of 0 this time. Essentially, you’re just betting on them to win the match. But, this differs from a standard ‘match result’ bet in that you get your money back if it’s a draw. If the two teams draw, your handicap has been equaled, and you don’t lose your money.
At this point, you might be thinking that Asian handicaps are fairly straightforward. In truth, they are, but only when they’re single handicaps. Everything I’ve mentioned has been a single Asian handicap, but there are double handicaps too. A double Asian handicap is more complex and combines two different handicaps into one bet. This is where things can get a bit complicated and tricky to explain.
You can bet on a match where the handicap is set to something like (-0.5, -1) for one team. In this instance, if you bet on the (- 0.5, -1) team then you’re splitting your stake in half. Half of it gets put on the team to win with a -0.5 handicap, while the other half is bet on them to win with a -1 handicap. You will win the entire bet if the team you bet on wins by more than two goals. If they win by one goal, then you reclaim half your stake and you win with the other half. The best way to explain this is with an example, so we’ll go back to that Chelsea vs. Hull match!
Let’s say you place a £5 bet on Chelsea (-0.5, -1) with odds of 2/1. If they win by more than two goals, then you end up with £15 – your original £5 stake, plus £10 for winning the bet as they overcame both handicaps. But, if they win by one goal, you end up with £7.50 – half your £5 stake gets returned, and you then earn £5 because the other half won the bet. Basically, a double handicap that includes a round number like this will give you a bit of a safety net.
Then, you have a double handicap that includes (0. -0.5). In this instance, you win if your team wins by more than a goal. If it’s a draw, you lose half your stake and get the other half back.
Benefits Of Betting On Football Asian Handicaps
One of the main benefits of betting on Asian handicaps is that they can provide much better value for your bets. In many cases, teams that are favourites to win will have very poor odds, so much so that it’s not worth betting on them as you’ll hardly win anything. But, if you use an Asian handicap, you can get better odds and still bet on the favourites to win. Odds are improved because you’re adding something extra to betting on the match result.
Asian Handicap Betting Tips
You can earn a lot of money if you bet on Asian handicaps in the correct way. One tip is to use handicaps when betting on teams that are favourites to win their match. For example, bet on Barcelona to win with a handicap of -2.5 when they’re playing at home to the team that’s bottom of the table. You’ll get better odds than if you bet on them to win, and there’s a high chance a good team will score lots of goals against a weaker one.
It’s also good to use positive handicaps when there’s a close match happening. As an example, let’s say you’re betting on Arsenal vs. Tottenham. The chances of both teams winning are fairly equal, but Arsenal will be favourites as they’re at home. In this instance, bet on Tottenham to win with a handicap of +1.5. If they win the match, then you win too. But, they can lose a tight match 1-0, and you’ll still win if you bet on them with +1.5.
Asian handicaps can be a great way of getting more out of match result bets. You can also place these bets in-play if you wish. Always remember to compare the odds before you place your bet to ensure you get the best value out there!
