How Far Will Russia Go At The 2018 World Cup?

Published on December 4, 2017 by Tim @ Betting Gods

As hosts of the 2018 World Cup, Russia were placed into Pot A as one of the seeded teams, however at number 65 in the FIFA World Rankings they are currently the lowest-ranked team in the finals. Therefore, it could be worth taking a look at how Russia may fare.

What Stage Will Russia Be Eliminated From The 2018 World Cup Betting

6/4 Last-16, 5/2 Group Stages, 11/4 Quarter-Finals, 8/1 Semi-Finals, 20/1 Runner-Up, 33/1 Winner

Russia had just reached the semi-finals of the 2008 European Championships when they put forward their bid to host the 2018 World Cup – and dreams of winning the world’s biggest football tournament on home soil were running high. However, Russia have regressed since then, with arguments between coaches and players leading to several managerial changes.

They also failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, then failed to progress from the group-stages in the 2012 European Championship after winning one and drawing one of their 3 group games. They again failed to progress past the group-stages at the 2014 World Cup after gaining just 2 draws, and suffered the same fate again at the 2016 Euros where they drew just 1 of their 3 games.

Of course, as they are seeded at the 2018 World Cup, Russia have avoided some of the biggest teams, but will still have to get past Uruguay, Saudia Arabia and Egypt if they want to make it to the knockout stages.

Uruguay are likely to prove the sternest test, as any team with world-class strikers like Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani will prove difficult to keep out, though Coach Oscar Tabarez has said he thinks the younger players he is bringing through will not be at their best until 2022.

Meanwhile, Egypt will be hungry after not qualifying for the World Cup since 1990, and the 7-time African Champions should not be underestimated with main striker Mohamed Salah having the pace to terrorise any team, as he continues to prove for Liverpool in the English Premier League. They also have a mean defence, and their counter-attacking style could prove a useful approach against a Russian side who may feel it is necessary to adopt an attacking style in front of their home fans.

Saudia Arabia are harder to weigh-up as, not only did they fire the coach who steered them to their first World Cup in 12-years, but they also fired his successor just days before the finals draw. They have made it out of the Group Stages before though, which was back in 1994 in the USA.

Summary

2018 World Cup Group A looks the weakest of all 8 of the Final Groups, with Uruguay the highest-ranked team at 21, Egypt at 31 and Saudia Arabia at 63, however they’re all ranked above Russia. Uruguay should have little trouble qualifying with the talent at their disposal, whilst Egypt’s style of play could cause Russia all sorts of problems, and Saudia Arabia could yet prove a surprise package. Therefore, with Russia also failing to qualify for the knockout stages of any tournament since 2008, it could be another early exit for the hosts.
