Sedgefield Country Club is the perennial home of the Wyndham Championship, and the 7,127 yard Donald Ross designed par-70 is short by today’s standards.

Length and accuracy can both be useful attributes, but avoiding the 12 creeks is paramount to success, even though the course is widely perceived to be one of the easier par-70 course used on the PGA Tour. The Bermuda grass greens that replaced the old Bentgrass greens in 2012 can also be very fast in dry conditions.

This week’s market is headed by the 2013 Champion Patrick Reed, who finished 24th in defence of his crown the following year, but missed last year’s event. That course form, plus the fact that he’s the highest ranked player in the field, and he’s keen to amass some more Ryder Cup Points, suggests that Reed may well go close again, and the 18/1 on offer looks more than generous.

Next up is Bill Haas, who has yet to be rewarded for his consistency since the new greens were laid. Since then he’s finished 7/20/2/6, and his current form of 3/38/9/56 also suggests he should not be far away this week.

There’s also room for a couple of triple-figure selection in this week’s portfolio in Freddie Jacobson and Cameron Smith. Jacobson had plenty of solid form here a few years ago but, having taken it off his schedule for a few seasons, he finished second here in 2014. He again didn’t play last year, but it seems significant that he plays here again. The Swede currently sits at 72nd in the Fedex Cup Standings and, whilst he should make it to first round, a decent finish here could well put him in contention for making it right through to the Tour Championship.

Meanwhile, Smith definitely needs a good week if he’s to qualify for the Fedex Cup, as he’s languishing way down in 154th spot. However, he’s moving in the right direction after finishing 34th and 22nd in the last two tournaments, and that form could see him go even closer at a venue where he finished 18th on debut last year.
