Golf Tips : Ryder Cup: Can The Postman Deliver?
This year’s Ryder Cup has been built up like never before and now the three most exhilarating days of the golfing calendar are now nearly upon us.
Jingoistic golf punters will soon be heading to the bookies to pile masses of patriotic money on Europe racking up a hat-trick of victories – but are they value to lift the trophy aloft on Sunday? And will victory be delivered once more by Europe’s Ryder Cup Postman Ian Poulter?
Ryder Cup Statistics
The current Ryder Cup format of Europe vs USA was established in 1979, since when Europe has been victorious 9 times, USA 7 times, and there’s been one draw.
However, Europe has won 8 of the last 9 matches, 5 of the last 6 matches – and the last two.
Of those 17 matches – 11 were won by the home side.
Europe’s current team has won 69 and halved 18 of the 129 games they’ve played.
USA’s current team has lost 52, halved 18 and won only 43 of the 113 games they’ve played.
Europe’s Team has 4 of the top 6 players in the official golf world rankings, whilst Team USA has just one.
Europe’s Captain Paul McGinley has won 3 Ryder Cups as a player and two as a Vice-Captain, and is yet to lose a Ryder Cup match.
Tom Watson captained Team USA to victory in England in 1993 and won 3 Ryder Cups as a player, never losing but drawing once.
Europe 4/6 Draw 11/1 USA 7/4
It’s hard to split the equally impressive Captains, but home advantage and Europe’s recent dominance suggest they are the rightful 4/6 favourites. If you see anything bigger than 4/6, snap it up, but with heads and hearts saying a Europe win, the bookies may be forced to cut the price further under the weight of support.
Europe Win 4/6
Top European Points Scorer
The Ryder Cup continually motivates Ian Poulter to play a level of golf rarely seen elsewhere. He’s been Europe’s leading points scorer in the last three Ryder Cups (one tied with Luke Donald) and has won an amazing 12 of his 15 matches. He looks sure to play at least four matches, if not five, and the 8/1 each-way is likely to prove very popular over the next few days, despite his poor season. Can the Postman deliver again – yes he can!
Ian Poulter 8/1 each-way
Top USA Points Scorer
After their recent kickings, only Johnson, Kuchar, Bradley and Mahan boast a better than 50% strike rate, and only Mahan of those four has claimed a recent victory. Meanwhile, Rickie Fowler is that passionate about winning that he has reputedly had USA carved into his hair, whilst Bubba Watson could be dangerous too. Back all three win.
Rickie Fowler 11/2
Hunter Mahan 12/1
Bubba Watson 10/1
