Golf Tips: Martin To Laird It Over Shriners Rivals

There are three tournaments worthy of consideration this week as the London Club hosts the Volvo World Matchplay, Miguel Jimenez bids for a hat-trick in the Hong Kong Open, and his fifth title in the event in the last 11 years, and the PGA Tour stages the Shriners Hospital For Children Open. And here are our golf betting tips for this week:

Volvo World Matchplay

16 players head to the London Club this week for the nomadic tournament which Graeme McDowell won in Bulgaria last year. The first of the event is a round-robin format with four groups of four players playing three matches against their group opponents, with two from each group progressing to the quarter-final knockout stages. It’s also a Wednesday start so get your bets on early.

The market is headed by a trio of winning European Ryder Cuppers in Stenson, McDowell and Dubuisson, however I’d rather take a chance on a losing Ryder Cupper in the shape of Patrick Reed who has remained over here to stage a one-man American revenge mission.

After being the top-American points scorer in the Ryder Cup (started the outsider of the 12-man team), Reed managed 3½ points and can make his presence felt here against several players who may be resting on their laurels.

I am going to back a second player though in Jamie Donaldson as claiming the winning point for Europe may just elevate him to a new level, and his star has very much been in the ascendancy this year.

Reed @ 10/1

Donaldson @ 12/1

Hong Kong Open

This has very much been a Jimenez benefit recently, and in claiming the title for the last two years has extended his own record for being the oldest winner of a European Tour event. However, he doesn’t arrive here in as good a form as last year and I’m happy to let him go at 12/1.

Two players I do want in my punting portfolio this week are Robert Jan Derksen and Peter Lawrie. Derksen, as mentioned last week, is playing some of the best golf of his career after announcing he will retire at the end of the season, and could well challenge on a course where he has finished 15/3/11/4 on his last four visits. 33/1 looks a fair price.

At much bigger odds of 250/1, it might just be worth risking a few quid on Peter Lawrie. The Irishman has endured a rough year but may just be sparked back into life at a course where he’s finished 4th and 7th in the last five years.

Derksen each-way @ 33/1

Peter Lawrie each-way @ 250/1

The Shriners Hospital Childrens Open

The second week of the PGA wrap around season as it’s become known ties in some nice course and recent form in the shape of Martin laird and Ryo Ishikawa.

Laird in particular stands out as he’s a previous winner and runner-up here and played extremely well last week. He was also waxing lyrical about getting back together with his old coach, how much he was enjoying playing golf again, and how good his short game currently is.

Ishikawa can also boast a second place here and looked to be heading for a better than 19th placed finish last week until a late double-bogey knocked him down a few places.

Laird each-way @ 33/1

Ishikawa each-way @ 80/1
