Andy To Prove Handy In Alfred Dunhill Championship

This week’s action centres on the Alfred Dunhill Championship as South Africa hosts the European Tour for a second successive week, and we’ve got a variety of golf betting tips for the event.

Charl Schwartzel (8/1), Louis Oosthuisen (9/1) and Danny Willett (10/1) head the market but it’s possible to pick holes in all of them.

Despite Schwartzel’s outstanding record in the event, 3 wins and 4 runner-up spots in 10 attempts, his wins in the last two years followed 2nd and 6th placed finishes at the Nedbank, where he only managed 14th last week, and hit some appalling shots over the weekend. He may bounce back but I’ll still pass.

Oosthuisen is just the opposite. Recent form figures of 6/7/14/7 suggest his turn might not be far away, however his event figures of 29/MC/39/MC/MC/MC/MC/MC/MC/WD hardly suggest he likes the course.

Meanwhile, last week’s winner Willett’s progressive course form of 37/18/9 reflects the 27-year-olds steady general improvement, but it’s likely he’ll have been partying hard after winning $1.25 million last week.

I’m plumping for two outright selections this week, both of whom I’m convinced will win a European Tour event before too long, and have some worthwhile course form to their name.

Andy Sullivan

The 28-yearold claimed three top-5 finishes last season including in last month’s Turkish Airlines Open, and event figures of 3/14 suggest he could well challenge this week. 25/1 isn’t massive value, but it’s big enough.

1.5 points each-way Andy Sullivan @ 25/1

Kristopher Broberg

Top-3 finishes in both the Irish Open and the Scottish Open suggest Broberg should cross the finishing line first at some point this season, and his average recent form means he goes off at a big looking 66/1 here. He missed the cut here last year, but was 2nd the year before.

We’ll finish this week’s staking plan with three players who certainly have the credentials to post a top-10 finish.

2 points Scott Jamieson top-10 @ 11/2

The Scot posted top-10 finishes in 4 of his last 13 events last year and, though when he’s bad he’s really bad, he’s posted one top-10 finish in four attempts here. Statistics which suggest 11/2 for him to add to his top-10 tally is good value.

2 points Andrea Pavan top-10 @ 6/1

The Italian lost his Tour card last year (regained at Tour School), but posted three top-10 finishes in his last 13 events and has finished 7/11 here in two attempts.

1 point Soren Hansen top-10 @ 11/1

Fourth here in 2004, the Dane did not play again in the event until last year where he finished 6th after blowing a great chance of at least finishing second. Didn’t find much form for the rest of the season but it seems significant that he returns again to a happy hunting ground.
