Dante To Tell The True Story

Many reputations have burned in the inferno that is York’s Derby Trial, whilst Authorized (2007), Motivator (2005) and North Light (2004) have all doubled-up in the Derby in the last ten years.

Authorized’s trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam is likely represented by Arod, but the favourite, True Story, belongs to Godolphin who won the race in 1995 and 2002. He’s around even-money to win the race and cement his position as second favourite in the Derby market.

Horse Racing – York – Musidora Stakes – Wednesday

York’s Oaks trial has been won twice by both and Sir Michael Stoute and John Gosden in the last decade, and their representatives Shama and Eastern Belle both have claims. The one that really catches the imagination though is Queen of Ice. William Haggas’ charge has won both her starts including one on the prevailing soft ground. She is also bred to relish a bit of cut, being by Selkirk.

Horse Racing – York – Duke of York Stakes – Wednesday

Astaire blatantly didn’t stay the 7-furlongs of the Greenham behind 1,000 Guineas first and second Night of Thunder and Kingman, but should be in his element returned to sprinting. He’s also two from two at the course, loved the soft ground last year, gets weight from all his rivals, and has champion jockey Richard Hughes doing the steering.

Horse Racing – York – Yorkshire Cup – Friday

Seal of Approval was strongly backed on Tuesday from 10/1 into 13/2, and James Fanshawe’s fast improving, soft-ground loving filly may extend her record to five wins in seven runs.

Golf – European Tour – Open de Espana – Thursday -Sunday

The Open de Espana returns to the PGA Catalunya Resort for the first time since 2009, posing punters the problem of whether to rely on current in-form players or delve into the history books to see who played well here last time.

Sergio Garcia (5/1) and Francesco Molinari (14/1) head the market, which is no surprise after quality performances in last week’s Players Championship, nor in light of their ambitions to gain a spot in Europe’s Ryder Cup Team. However, it’s hard to argue that either of them represents much value.

The first five in 2009 event were headed by Thomas Levet (-18) with Fabrizio Zanotti (-16), Thomas Bjorn (-14), Peter Lawrie (-14) and Charles Schwartzel (-10) being the only players to make double-digits under-par. Other players who caught the eye that year were Rafa Cabrero Bello (40/1) who finished sixth despite a third round 74, and Alejandro Canizares (80/1) who was -8 after two rounds before a disappointing pair of 74s at the weekend. Both the Spaniards have improved since, and have also shown good form this season.

Other notables include David Horsey (66/1) who finished eighth here in 2009 and has two top-5 finishes in the event (be them on other courses), whilst Carlos del Moral (125/1) won the Q-school here last year.

Golf – PGA Tour – Byron Nelson – Thursday – Sunday

Lots of familiar names have turned up this year, and it’s not hard to see them at the top of the leaderboard come Sunday. First on anyone’s shortlist has to be Keegan Bradley (22/1) who won here on his debut in 2011, was a respectable 24th when defending champion, and then finished runner-up last year when gifting it to Sang Moon Bae. For those who want to chance an outsider, then you could do worse than back Jeff Overton outright (100/1). Also back him to finish in the top-ten (9/1), something he did in both 2010 and 2011, and has managed three times in sixteen events this season.
