2017 Lyoness Open Preview And Tips

This will be the eighth straight season the Diamond Country Club in Austrian has hosted the Lyoness Open. It’s a course that demands accuracy over power, though combining the two will still give a player a distinct advantage on a course that measures over 7,400 yards. Hitting a high-percentage of greens in regulation has also been a notable achievement of the past winners, whilst it goes without saying that the winner’s short game will also need to be somewhere near his best to get the job done on smaller than average greens that were running at about 11 on the Stimpmeter in 2016.

The Diamond Course was only established in 2002, and it remains quite exposed if the wind blows, which also brings the various water hazards more into play. If you’re going to do a bit of in-pay trading, then it’s worth noting that hole 1 is a real birdie chance, as is hole 4, whilst 2 is a tricky 200-yard par 3. Holes 7 and 8 are also notoriously hard, and most players will do well to play those holes in par for the entire week. Meanwhile, when the nerves are jangling on Sunday afternoon, holes 15 and 16 are both par 5’s, but 17 is a potential card-wrecker, whilst 18 is relatively simple.

Two players stand alone at the top of the betting, and this is undeniably a fantastic chance for Bernd Wiesberger to win another title in his home country. However, it remains to be seen as to whether he can raise his game for a tournament of this nature having been playing on the world’s biggest stages recently – and I can let him go at 9/2.

Much more interesting is Joost Luiten, who surely has too much class to not get back in the winner’s enclosure at some point, and he will get few better opportunities as this. His current form doesn’t make him a 11/1 shot, but it’s hard to argue with those odds on his course form of 3/1/3/6 – and the Dutchman really should be in the hunt come Sunday.

Two other players who could go well at more rewarding odds are Zander Lombard and Eddie Pepperell. Lombard was second just three starts ago, and he was also fifth here last year. Meanwhile, Pepperell has never played here before, but drops in class at a time of year he has often shown decent form at in the past.

Finally, a top-10 bet on the short-hitting Eduardo De La Riva may pay dividends, as the Spaniard has took a liking to this course in the past with figures of 7/7/MC/10, and he finished 18th three starts ago.
