2017 Dell Technologies Championship Golf Tips

The second-leg of the Fedex Cup Play-offs may have a new sponsor as Dell Technologies takes over from Deutsche Bank – but the tournament will still be played at TPC Boston. It also continues its Friday to Monday schedule, so don’t start ringing Sky Sports if you can’t find coverage on Thursday evening.

At just over 7,300 yards, TPC Boston isn’t the toughest course on tour, and was designed to reward those who take risks, and execute their shots properly. There are driveable par-4s, whilst the par 5’s should be reachable by most in two shots and, with conditions forecast to be firm, a total of 15 under is expected to be the winning mark this year.

Only the top-100 players in the Fedex Standings are here this week and, with only the top-70 in the standings after this week progressing to the BMW Championship, it would be no surprise to see a few players currently sat between 71st and 100 putting maximum effort this week. However, those safely in the top-30 can play with freedom this week, though they also know that a win here gets them in the all-important top-5 that are guaranteed to win the Fedex Cup if they win the final event, the Tour Championship at East Lake.

Numbers 1 and 2 in the standing, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth, certainly put on a show for the crowds last week, but neither appeal at around 8/1 with fourth being the best either of them have managed in previous visits to TPC Boston. Rory McIlroy makes more appeal at around 16/1, but there’s a nagging doubt that even $13 Million isn’t enough motivation for him to climb out of the small rut he’s looked in all season.

One player I’m sure will be motivated this week is Patrick Reed who, at number 32 in the standings, still needs a big performance to secure his place at East Lake. He’s certainly capable of putting one in here too, as he’s been fourth and fifth in the last two renewals, and a runner-up finish two starts ago proves his current form.

Meanwhile, an outsider this week who catches the eye is James Hahn. A former winner of the Wells Fargo Championship, like past winners Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, he finished fifth here last year – and he also needs a big week at 59th in the standings.

I’m also adding Louis Oosthuisen, Paul Casey, Kevin Chappell and Charlie Hoffman to the portfolio this week, four players that boast a nice mix of course form and current form, and that also sit comfortably inside the top-30 in the standings – which should allow them to play with enough freedom to challenge for a top-5 spot.
