Scottish Sprint Handicap 2019 Summary

The last six winners have all been classy enough to have earned a mark of at least 93, and that suggests the likes of Classic Pursuit, Primo’s Comet, Saaheq, Eeh Bah Gum, Mokaatil, Gabrial The Saint, Harome, and Royal Brave may be up against it, especially as five of the last six winners have carried more weight than any of those horses.

Four-year-olds also have a poor record in the race with no wins in the last six years, which means that the trends may be against Marnie James, Savala, and Soldier Minute.

The classy trio of A Momentofmadness, Final Venture, and Copper Knight are also trying to defy a longer than normal absence by winning this on their seasonal debut, which only one of the last six winners has achieved.

That leaves us with an interesting trio of contenders in Captain Colby, Ornate, and Line Of Reason.
Captain Colby is having his second run back after wind surgery and his run 18 days ago could have put this course and distance winner spot on for this. However, that win did come off an 8lb lower mark and today’s mark of 98 would be the highest he’s won off in his career, which is a tough ask for most seven-year-olds. He’s also drawn lower than the last four winners in stall six.

Ornate is an interesting candidate as he was rated as high as 110 in his prime and can race off 99 here. He also showed his well-being just two days ago and, whilst that short gap would be a worry with some horses, he did win two races in the space of three days last year. It’s also easy to forgive his poor run in last year’s edition of this race, as he had a low draw and ruined what chance he had by stumbling at the start. He looks to have a much more favourable draw this year in stall 13 and his trainer has scored with six of his last 19 runners.

The 2017 winner Line Of Reason may also give a god account as he’s now 3lb lower than when successful two-years ago though, at the age of nine, his new mark looks about right. A draw in stall five is also lower than ideal, but he has proved his well-being with a good run in the last week.

Scottish Sprint Cup Handicap 2019 Verdict

Captain Colby looks to have it do off his current mark, but it’s possible to make a case for both Line Of Reason and Ornate. Both could easily go close but Ornate is given the nod from his high-draw and with his trainer in excellent form.
