Manchester United Form
Manchester United’s recent away defeats at Barcelona and Everton have revealed some big cracks in the Manchester United team, but United have won their last three Premier League games at Old Trafford against West Ham, Watford, and Southampton. However, they’ve only drawn their last two home games against fellow top-six sides Liverpool and Arenal, whilst they were also beaten 3-0 at home by Tottenham early in the season.
Those last three home wins have seen both teams score in all three matches, with West Ham and Watford scoring once and Southampton scoring twice. In fact, most visiting Premier League teams have scored at Old Trafford this season.
Manchester City Form
A Champions League exit has made the Premier League Title Man City’s main target and they will have been happy to beat their Champions League conquerors Tottenham 1-0 at The Etihad on Saturday.
That 1-0 win may have been a comedown after the midweek 4-3 thriller, but City have also kept clean sheets in three of their current-run of four consecutive away wins. They’ve also generally kept things tight on their travels against top-six sides this season, beating Arsenal 2-0, Tottenham 1-0, and drawing 0-0 at Liverpool.
Man United vs Man City Head To Heads
United’s 3-2 win at The Etihad a couple of seasons ago was an amazing game, especially as City should probably have been 5-0 up at half-time. They actually went into the break just 2-0 up and paid the price as United produced a stunning three-goals second-half performance to highlight that anything can happen in the Manchester Derby.
However, City have generally been the better team over the last few seasons. They’ve won the last two encounters at Old Trafford 2-1, whilst they also won this season’s match at The Etihad 3-1.
Manchester United vs Manchester City Team News
Kevin De Bruyne is Manchester City’s biggest headache and the hamstring injury he picked up against Spurs means he is likely to be missing on Wednesday. However, City have plenty of back-ups including David Silva who missed the match against Tottenham. Fernandinho and Gundogan could also feature.
United could welcome back Ander Herrara, whilst Luke Shaw is likely to slot straight back in at left-back after his suspension. However, it will be more interesting to see if Solskjaer makes some ruthless cuts after their embarrassing performance at Everton.
Man United vs Man City Verdict
United could easily rediscover their best form on such a big occasion and a thrilling end-to-end Manchester Derby would be appreciated by football fans everywhere. Recent head-to heads suggest that the most likely result is City to win and both teams to score. But United’s home results against the biggest teams in the world this season doesn’t back that up. United have lost at home to nil to Juventus, PSG, and Barcelona and, they failed to score in a 0-0 draw with Liverpool.
Man City have also played more defensively on their travels this season, and Guardiola is likely to instruct his team to conserve some energy in case United find some inspiration from somewhere. In their current position, and playing at home, United may be the team to commit players forward early and that could play to City’s strengths. That means a Man City win to nil could be the value-bet.
