Gordon Richard Stakes 2019 Runner-By-Runner Guide

Thundering Blue

The only runner in this year’s field for the Gordon Richard Stakes that has to carry a 3lb penalty, which he earned by winning a weak-looking Group 2 last season. However, he’s wasn’t disgraced when running in some big races around the world after that. Negatives are he’s six and he has it all do at the weights with the favourite.

Crystal Ocean

Typically improved as a four-year-old under the watchful eye of trainer Sir Michael Stoute, winning the 2018 edition of this race by just a neck from the re-opposing Fabricate. That was the first of three successive wins before he finished runner-up on his last three starts to the high-class trio of Poet’s Word, Enable, and Cracksman. Meets nothing of that calibre here but, having perhaps not been at his best on last-year’s seasonal debut despite winning, he may be more vulnerable than his rating and odds suggest he is. He would also be the first horse to win the race twice.

Extra Elusive

Flopped in a Group 3 on his final start last season but this four-year-old looked an improved animal when runner-up in a Listed Race at Kempton on Polytrack last time. Interestingly, he had Fabricate five-lengths behind in fourth that day.

Ran Crystal Ocean to a neck in last year’s renewal of this race, when he was race-fit after winning the Magnolia Stakes at Kempton. He has followed a similar route this year but was only fourth in this year’s Magnolia Stakes. Michael Bell’s runners are probably running better than his record implies.

Knight To Behold

Nicely-bred four-year-old that was a bit hit and miss last season. He won the Lingfield Derby Trial from the St Leger winner Kew Gardens and also won a Group 2 in France. However, he beat just one- horse home in each of his other three races. Could have more improvement to come this season and it would be no surprise to see Oisin Murphy try and make plenty of use of him.

His connections are having are a great season, and he won races off marks of 88 and 98 last season, including over course and distance. However, this five-year-old probably needs to have improved a lot since we last saw him when he was well-beaten in a handicap off a mark of 106.

Trais Fluors

No French-trained horse has ever won the Gordon Richard Stakes but this five-year-old has already won a Group 3 over a mile and looked in good form with himself when winning his last two starts over half-a-furlong shorter than today. He officially has 16lb to find with Crystal Ocean but he is race-fit.

Gordon Richard Stakes 2019 Verdict

Victory for the high-class Crystal Ocean wouldn’t be a shock, but his odds look on the short-side considering he only managed to beat the third lowest-rated runner in the field Fabricate by a head last year. If he repeats that form, he could be vulnerable.

Thundering Blue is an admirable sort but must carry a penalty, whilst the French-raider Trais Fluors is respected. However, Knight To Behold was considered a high-class colt last time and, if he’s improved from three to four, he could be hard to peg back if given a positive ride by Oisin Murphy.
