The Alleged Stakes (Saturday 13 April, 16:35) is a Group 3 Race for horses aged four and older that takes place at Naas over 10 furlongs.

It is named after Vincent O’Brien’s dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Alleged. Its most famous winner is Dylan Thomas who won the 2007 edition and went on to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the same season.

Alleged Stakes 10-Year-Trends

Half of the last 10 winners were four-year-olds, but horses aged six, seven, and eight have also been successful.

Nine of the last 10 winners were rated at least 100, with the highest-rated winner being on a mark of 120. Weights carried have ranged from 8-12 to 9-10.

Three of the last 10 favourites have won at odds of 5/4, 11/8, and 7/4, but the other seven winners have been returned at odds ranging from 4/1 to 12/1.

Dermot Weld and Jim Bolger have both trained two of the last 10 winners, whilst Aidan O’Brien trained the 2018 winner, having also trained three of the first five winners of this race in 2003, 2004, and 2006.

Alleged Stakes Runner-By-Runner Guide

Flag Of Honour

Rated 117 but has to shoulder a big penalty having won Group 1, 2, and 3 races last year. However, they were all over 14 furlongs and he was beaten in all three group races he contested over shorter distances.

Latrobe

Last year’s Irish Derby winner also has to shoulder a Group 1 penalty and he’s another that was beaten over shorter distances before winning a maiden and the Irish Derby over 12 furlongs. He was also well-beaten in a hot-contest at Sha Tin when last seen in December.

Hazapour

Kicked off his three-year-old season with a win in a Group 3 over this trip at Leopardstown. He then looked a non-stayer when fifth in The Derby before finishing a disappointing third in a Group 3 when dropped back in trip. There may have been something amiss that day, as he’s not been seen since, and he could be a useful tool over this sort of trip this season for Dermot Weld.

Magical

122-rated filly who excelled in the Autumn last season with a win on Champions Day at Ascot and when second to Enable at the Breeders’ Cup over 12 furlongs. Negatives are she’s never previously won before July and she may be better over further.

Mustajeer

Six-year-old that has earned a rating of 111 but has done it by running in handicaps and Listed races. Dual course winner but may also be better at further.

Stellar Mass

Group 3 winner in 2016 but he generally struggles at this level and finished well behind Still Standing last month.

Still Standing

Won three of his four handicaps last season and took another step up the ladder when winning a Listed Race last time. He’s also two wins from two runs at Naas and, though he needs to improve further, he is race-fit.

Success Days

Old man of the party at the age of seven and he’s not won since July 2017. He also prefers soft ground, so looks vulnerable to younger higher-rated horses.

Alleged Stakes 2019 Verdict

This is an excellent renewal of the Alleged Stakes as magical, Latrobe, and Flag Of Honour are three seriously talented horses. However, as all three are likely to prove better over further, they could be vulnerable to a horse ideally suited by the trip.

The two horses that make the shortlist are Still Standing and Hazapour. The former is respected as he’s improving rapidly and has won twice at Naas. However, Hazapour could be a top-notch performer on decent ground over 10-furlongs this season and is given a chance to upset the favourites.
