Free Tips For Schalke V Man City
The Champions League round of 16 continues on Wednesday night and one of the main matches is Schalke vs Manchester City, with the first-leg taking place at Schalke’s Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen.
It looks a tough task on paper for a Schalke side that are currently languishing in the bottom-half of the German Bundesliga as they are taking on the English Premier League leaders.
We’ve taken a look at past head-to-heads, both team’ Champions League form so far, as well as their current domestic league form, and the latest team news to produce our Schalke vs Manchester free tips.
Schalke vs Manchester City Head-To-Heads
Manchester City have enjoyed some notable successes against Schalke in their past head-to-heads. The first of those came way back in 1970 when City went on to win the Cup Winners’ Cup after beating Schalke in the semi-finals by five goals to two.
In 2008, City also beat Schalke 2-0 in Germany in the group stages of the UEFA Cup. Sadly, with Vincent Kompany being the only survivor of that match that still plays for either club, these head-to-heads should have little relevance on this match.

Schalke’s Champions League Form
Schalke finished second in Group D in the Champions League group stage, where four clean sheets were the main reason why they progressed to the knockout stage, including home wins to nil against Galatasaray and Lokomotiv Moscow. But the form of the whole group is questionable, as only the group leaders Porto are enjoying a good domestic season, and they were the ones that held Schalke to a 1-1 draw in Germany before beating them 3-1 in Portugal.
Manchester City’s Champions League Form
Manchester City’s Champions League away-form matched Schalke’s home form with a seven-point haul, and the form of those matches looks slightly stronger. It’s worth noting that City also beat Hoffenheim away and they currently sit six-places above Schalke in the German Bundesliga.

Schalke’s Current Home Form
Schalke finished last season strongly to earn their spot in this season’s Champions League but are currently having a poor season in fourteenth position in the German Bundesliga. They don’t usually concede a lot of goals but have won just once in their last five home league games, including defeats to Munchen Gladbach (0-2), Bayer Leverkusen (1-2), and Borussia Dortmund (1-2).
Manchester City’s Current Away Form
City continue to maul teams at home in the English Premier League but their away form is not as dominant, with a recent 2-1 defeat at Newcastle sandwiched between wins at Everton (0-2), Huddersfield (0-3) and Southampton (1-3). That recent win against ninth placed Everton suggests they should have the edge over a Schalke side currently residing in a lower position in the Bundesliga.
Schalke vs Manchester City Teams News
Interestingly, ex-Manchester City player and Welsh international Rabbi Matondo started his first match for Schalke at the weekend but he could be replaced here by Yevhen Konoplyanka. Another ex-Manchester City player Matija Nastasic should play, as should Rudy who is reportedly on City Manager Pep Guardiola’ shopping list.
Guardiola’s main injury worries include Benjamin Mendy and Vincent Kompany but it will be interesting to see whether Phil Foden gets a game after an excellent performance in the FA Cup. However, it’s more likely that Guardiola will call upon of David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, and Fernandinho.
Lero Sane may also be benched against his former club in preference for Bernardo Silva, whilst Mahrez and Jesus may also be warming the bench if Guardiola opts to start with his usual preferred pairing of Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero.

Schalke vs Manchester City Summary
Fourteenth in the German Bundesliga vs first in the English Premier League suggests this will be a tough match for a Schalke side that has also lost three of its last five away games. But, whilst City are strong fancies to land odds of around 3/10, both City’s recent away form and Schalke’s home form suggest City won’t win by a landslide. That’s why the value could be backing Man City to win 2-0 and 2-1.
