Ryanair Gold Cup Novice Chase 10-Year-Trends
The last 10 editions of the Ryanair Gold Cup Novice Chase have been won by two 6-year-olds, three 7-year-olds, three 8-year-olds, and one 9-year-old.
Seven of those winners had won their previous start, whilst the last nine winners had run between 18 and 49 days earlier.
Noel Meade, who is without a runner this year, has won three of the last 10 editions, whilst Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins have won one renewal each. Interestingly, five of the last 10 editions have been won by horses from small stables.
Ryanair Gold Cup Novice Chase 2019 Runner-By-Runner Guide
Gordon Elliott-trained six-year-old who has won five races this season but is still rated between 8-12lbs lower than his rivals. The form of his last win is also hard to weigh-up as, though he finished well in front of two rivals rated 147 and 150, he would have probably finished behind a lower-rated rival if that horses hadn’t fallen at the last when in the lead. Elliott did train the 2013 winner to win at double-figure odds, but Cubomania probably needs all his rivals to underperform to emerge in front.
154-rated chaser who is also trained by Gordon Elliott. He was also rated 90+ on the flat and was decent over hurdles, including winning a grade one at Fairyhouse. He also finished third in grade ones at last year’s Cheltenham and Punchestown Festivals and continued at a similar level this season over fences with thirds at the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals. However, there has to be a slight worry that he won’t be at his best on his third run at a big spring festival in five weeks.
The first of the Willie Mullins-trained duo and it could be wrong to think he’s the second-string because Paul Townend is riding him, as he normally does. Real Steel did disappoint at the Cheltenham Festival last time, when behind Mengli Khan, but it’s worth pointing out he was a shorter-price than Gordon Elliott’s runner there. He should also be suited to a return to a right-handed track and ground that isn’t as soft as it was at the Cheltenham Festival.
Voix De Reve
The second of the Willie Mullins horses and he also ran against Mengli Khan and Real Steal at the Cheltenham Festival. He was also still going well in that race when falling three fences from home and he may well have fared best of the trio if he has stood up. He’s another that has won races on a right-handed track, though he’s probably not been seen at his best on two previous visits to Fairyhouse.
The one horse in the race that is not rained by Willie Mullins or Gordon Elliott, but his small stable’s only runner in April finished third on the all-weather, whilst its last jumps runner in March won. He’s often at his best after a break of a few weeks and his trainer has probably had this race in mind since he disappointed after a quick reappearance when last seen in February. However, the form of his win on his penultimate start looks seriously impressive. He gave Cheltenham Festival winner A Plus Tard a stone and a 2¼ lengths beating that day and is another that has performed best on right-handed tracks.
Ryanair Gold Cup Novice Chase 2019 Verdict
It’s impossible to rule out any of the quintet but Cubomania has a few pounds to find on form. The other four runners are separated by just a four pounds on ratings and any of them could win. Real Steal, Mengli Khan, and Vois Du Reve are hard to split on their return to a right-handed track but, as neither Willie Mullins or Gordon Elliott has dominated this race, it could be worth taking a chance on Winter Escape, as he looks to have been kept fresh for this assignment, and horses trained by small-trainers having a great record in the race.
