Old Trafford is the venue for the first-leg of the Manchester United vs Barcelona Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday 10 April, with the match being shown live on BT Sport from 8 p.m.
It’s a massive occasion for both clubs and their larger than normal fan bases, and we can only hope the match lives up to its billing. Check out our stats, analysis, and free tips for Manchester United vs Barcelona Champions League Quarter-Final first-leg.
Manchester United Form
Manchester United are in a much better position than they were before Ole Gunner Solskjaer arrived, but he still has a lot of work if they’re to get anything out this season. Recent Premier League defeats by Arsenal and Wolves have seriously dented their hopes of qualifying for next year’s Champions League, whilst Wolves also dumped United out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage.
Of course, before those three defeats in four games, United enjoyed the dream 3-1 win in Paris that got them onto the Champions League quarter-finals against the odds. The big question is, can they take another big European scalp to keep the Solskjaer’s dream of leading United to Champions League glory 20-years on from him scoring the winner in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
Despite that dream, United’s home form in the Champions League this season still has to be a concern as they’ve lost to PSG and Juventus, and only managed a draw against Valencia, failing to score in any of those three matches.
Barcelona have enjoyed the luxury of a big lead in La Liga for most of the season, which has allowed them to take it easy when they’ve needed to. Despite that, their current run sees them come into this match on the back of eight wins and a draw in their last nine matches, including wins against closest La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
Their Champions League form this season could have been more impressive but, after collecting nine points from their opening three games in the group stage, they simply cruised home. Having been held to a 0-0 draw in Lyon in their last-16 clash, they then stepped it up a gear in the home-leg to record a stunning 5-1 win.
Manchester United vs Barcelona Head-To-Heads
Manchester United and Barcelona have met four times in previous Champions League seasons but, as the last of those was in 2011, they may have little relevance to this year’s match.
The first time they met was in the semi-finals in 2011, when United left the Nous Camp with a 0-0 draw before winning the home leg 1-0.
However, it was a different story in the finals of 2009 and 2011, with Barcelona emerging victorious 2-0 and 3-1.
Manchester United vs Barcelona Team News
Barcelona haven’t reported any major injury worries in the led up to the match, but United will be hoping that both Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford are fit to play after missing their recent defeat to Wolves. Paul Pogba will boost the squad after missing out on the 3-1 win in Paris due to suspension.
United also have several players that are just one yellow card away from missing the second-leg in Barcelona, including Matic, Shaw, and Herrera.
Manchester United vs Barcelona Verdict
Away goals mean a lot in the Champions League and, as United have conceded seven goals and scored just four in their last four games, surely Barcelona will come to Old Trafford and attack. Especially as they have scored 20 goals in their last six games and conceded just six, with four of those conceded goals coming against Villareal.
However, as it’s odds on for there to be more than 2.5 goals, and only around 6/4 for more than 3.5 goals, the value may simply be in backing Barcelona to win at anything bigger than even-money.
