Sidney Banks Memorial Novices’ Hurdle 2020 Analysis
14:31 at Huntingdon on 6th February
This Listed contest takes place over 2 miles 3 furlongs and 137 yards with the last two winners Vinndication and Keepers Hill both going on to enjoy many more successes afterwards. Recent winners have tended to come from the first few in the betting, with only one of the last nine winners returned at bigger odds than 9-2.
Only five runners are set to go to post for the 2010 Sidney Banks Memorial Novices’ Chase and they all have a chance on their best figures. Former point-to-point winner Up The Straight caused a 33/1 shock on his hurdles debut and his trainer Richard Rowe was very bullish about his chances when he was well-backed prior to disappointing in a Grade 2 at Sandown last time. The form of that race has also taken plenty of knocks since, so he needs to step up to justify his trainer’s faith in him.
It will also be disappointing if Shan Blue wins as, whilst he theoretically has a good chance getting 5lb from a couple of his rivals, he’s been beaten in three of his four runs over hurdles including when looking one-paced over a longer trip last time.
Hang In There is another horse that was well-beaten at Sandown when last sees, but he could benefit from stepping up in trip here and trainer Emma Lavalle won the 2014 edition of this race. Hang In There also beat Pacify earlier in the season but is 5lb worse off here.
Pacify also step up in trip, but the jury is out as to whether this former 100-rated flat horse will benefit from the extra distance. If it does, his finishing kick could make him a danger to all, and he may jump better on the is flat track than he did at Cheltenham last time.
Betway Handicap Hurdle 2020 Analysis
15:05 at Huntingdon on 6th February
This class 2 handicap takes place over the same course and distance as the preceding Sidney Banks Memorial Novices’ Hurdle and clock watchers will be comparing sectional times after the races to determine the future chances of many horses that are involved.
Noticeable trends from the previous six editions show that five winners have been rated between 124 and 127, with the other rated 135. The first five winners also carried between 10-7 and 11-1, but last year’s winner carried just 10-4.
Those statistics suggest the first four horses in the weights will struggle to win off marks of between 137 and 146 and carrying 11-5 or upwards. Three of those four horses, Virgilio, Messire Des Obeaux, and Settie Hill return from lay-offs of between 446 and 1,034 days and no previous winner has been absent for more than 110 days. Colonial Dreams also disappointed last time and is 6lb above his last winning mark.
Cristal Spirit was impressive when winning a maiden hurdle last time when stepped up to a similar trip but his last wins on the flat and over jumps have come on heavy ground, so he may find today’s good-to-soft (and drying) surface a little lively. Sleep Easy, Linger, and Cevaro Mix should appreciate the ground but aren’t normally up to this class.
Didtheyleaveyouto has an obvious chance off a 7lb lower mark than at his prime and he’ll relish underfoot conditions. But he was a big disappointment last time and it’s a while since he troubled the judge.
