The Charleville Cheese Irish EBF Mares Novice Chase (Sunday 17 March) is a grade 2 chase run over a distance of 2 miles 6 furlongs and 12 yards at Limerick Racecourse.

It is an excellent opportunity for mares to win a first prize of €29,500 and the most famous horse on its roll of honour is the 2015 winner Vroum Vroum Mag.

Charleville Cheese Irish EBF Mares Novice Chase Trends

The last nine winners had all had a gap of at least 17 days between runs prior to success in the race and eight of the last nine winners were aged either six, seven, or eight.

All winners carried between 10-11 and 11-5 and five had won their previous run. The highest price any of the last nine winners has been returned is 6/1 and Willie Mullins has trained two of the last three winners of the race.

Charleville Cheese Irish EBF Mares Novice Chase Runner-By-Runner Guide

Dawn Shadow
Winner of four of her 17 races but has only won one of her five chases. She was favourite on her last start at Thurles, when stepped up to this kind of trip for the first time, but she wasn’t travelling as well as the front few when falling two fences from home.

Missy Tata
Was good enough to finish fourth in the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap in 2016 and she went on to win her next five races over hurdles. The last of those wins was in December 2016 off a mark of 145, but she didn’t appear again on the track until February 2019. She reappeared in a chase at Fairyhouse over 2 miles and 5 furlongs and bolted up on good ground. This is a further step up in trip and, though she’s potentially the best mare in the race by some way, and has won on both her previous visits to Limerick, most of her wins have come on better ground than she’ll be running on here.

Moyhenna
Only finished fifth to Dawn Shadow on her final start over hurdles but finished runner-up to two useful Willie Mullins-trained mares on her first two starts over fences. However, she’s since fallen and unseated on her last two starts. She has placed on both previous starts at Limerick but has looked to run out of gas late on when tried over this trip previously.

Oh Me Oh My
Rated only 116 and, having had nine chases, it’s hard to see why she’ll suddenly find the improvement needed to take this if any of the principles run up to their marks.

Redhotfillypeppers
A winner over this trip over hurdles at Punchestown last year and made a seamless transition to fences when winning over shorter at this course on her chasing debut. Wouldn’t have been as good over hurdles as Missy Tata, but handles soft ground well, and there’s a chance she could outstay the favourite on the prevailing ground. Looks to have been laid out for the race by Willie Mullins.

Sweet Destination
Stays the trip but look out of her depth here as she’s rated just 101.

Charleville Cheese Irish EBF Mares Novice Chase Summary

This could develop into a battle between Missy Tata and Redhotfillypeppers and, whilst Missy Tata may have the most potential, Redhotfillypeppers could find this test more to her liking on this occasion. Willie Mullins has also saddled the winners of two of the last three renewals and, having run over fences here on her chasing debut, looks to have laid her out for this race.
