Sandown provides punters with an interesting card on Friday, with a mixture of races. We’ve analysis and free tips for the Kingmaker Novices’ Chase, the Weatherbys TBA Jane Seymour Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle, and the Castel Royal Artillery Gold Cup.
The Kingmaker Novices’ Chase is a chance for potential Arkle Chase types to throw their hats into the ring before the Cheltenham Festival and it’s great that the 2019 renewal has been saved after Warwick was forced to abandon due to the recent worry about equine influenza.
There may only be four runners but it should be an informative contest with last year’s Betfair Hurdle winner and Supreme Novices’ Hurdle second Kalashnikov looking to make it three wins out of four over fences, though he certainly wasn’t disgraced when beaten by Dingo dollars at Kempton last time.
He faces three potentially interesting rivals, which are headed by Glen Forza who won a handicap at Kempton over Christmas. That win was only off a mark of 125 and he still has plenty to find with the favourite, as does Dell Oro who was beaten eight lengths by Gen Forza that day but is 11lb better off here.
That means the main danger may come from the €210,000 French import Dalila Du Seuil. She is officially rated 149 but, in receipt of her 7lb mares’ allowance, she looks overpriced as she could easily improve on her second start for Harry Fry.

This grade two hurdle offers a valuable first price of over £17,000 and five of the six runners are rated within 9lb of each other. Queenofhearts was impressive last time at Haydock but, as only one of the four previous winners shouldered a 5lb penalty to victory, it could be worth taking her on with the horse she beat into second that day Danse Idol.
The Paul Nicholl’s trained six-year-old looked a little short of pace in that contest and she could find this longer test at a stiffer track like Sandown much more to her liking judged on her previous win at Wincanton. That was also the only time Harry Cobden had taken the ride on her and it could be a bonus having him back on board here.

The Castel Royal Artillery Gold Cup provides amateur riders with a big chance to ride a winner at Sandown and this year’s likely candidates include last year’s winning combination of Rathlin Rose and jockey Guy Disney.
Guy Disney is three from four on David Pipe’s 11-year-old and has been on board for all three of Rathlin Rose’s course and distance wins.
He does have to give weight to some useful rivals in Carlos Du Fruitier and Keltus, with the latter looking especially well-treated if in-form after a lengthy absence from the track. However, the experience of Rathlin Rose and Disney over this track could prove invaluable and he is taken to add to his impressive Sandown record.
