Free Racing Tips For Dundalk For 1st March
Published on 28/02/19
There’s horse racing under the floodlights at Dundalk on Friday night (March 1) and one of the course’s biggest meetings of the year features the Listed Patton Stakes. Aidan O’Brien has won the last three renewals and it’s interesting that Ryan Moore is over to ride several O’Brien horses at the meeting.

Yuften has failed to win his previous two starts at six-furlongs but this formerly 116-rated horse is going to take some stopping here. He’s three from four here at Dundalk, with his one defeat coming by a neck over course and distance. The winner that day was rated 100 but the highest-rated rival that the now 95-rated Yuften faces here is the 83-rated Sharp Defence, and he only has to concede 5lb to that rival.
His 10lb claiming jockey also won easily on him last time over seven furlongs and it’s worth noting that he was in charge at the furlong pole that day with Sharp Defence in behind. On that evidence, he should get favourite-backers off to a great start.

A tricky looking race, with plenty of horses running in their first handicap that are likely to make significant improvement for doing so. Joseph O’Brien, who has trained the last two winners, clouds the issue by running four horses, so it could be worth taking his quartet on with Gatsby Cap.
After three runs in maidens over six furlongs, he should be suited by the step up to seven furlongs in handicap company, and the first-time cheekpieces suggest connections think they can exploit his mark.
His trainer also has a line of form with one of the O’Brien horses Isotope, with one of his string beating that rival into fourth last time.

That Is The Spirit could do with turning back the clock to when he was rated 100+, but there are a few reasons why he could go well back in handicap company after running well in claimers of late. The draw looks to have been kind to him and stall two could be a big advantage for this normally prominent racer, especially with the previous two winners of this race having been drawn in stalls two and three.
His jockey also dropped his whip at a crucial stage last time, whilst the fact his trainer reaches for first-time cheek-pieces suggests he thinks he might have him back in the sort of form that saw him win a handicap on turf off a 10lb higher mark last season.

England’s top all-weather trainer Archie Watson needs to be commended for taking aim at the Patton Stakes with his recent French winner Barys, but this Listed Race has been an Aidan O’Brien benefit so far, with the Master of Ballydoyle winning all four of the six subsequent renewals.
O’Brien has three entries this year, with Seamus Hefferman aboard Albuquerque, whilst Ryan Moore rides the top-rated Western Australia. However, it’s Van Beethoven that catches the eye as he is out of the top dirt sire Scat Daddy who also sired last year’s winner Mendelssohn. That means he could be the value bet with Donnacha O’Brien in the saddle.
