It’s impossible to be confident that Barters Hill retains the level of ability that saw him notch up a seven-timer earlier in his career, but the fact connections are persevering him with him after a couple of lengthy spells on the side-lines suggests they’re still hopeful he does. It was a high level of ability too, when you consider he beat the likes of Altior, Buveur D’Air, Belshill, and Politologue. A mark of 142 looks a decent one if he is right and, as a dual course winner, he looks worth chancing with his stable amongst the winners.

The presence of Buveur D’Air, Samcro and Summerville Boy in this year’s Fighting Fifth Hurdle make it one of the best renewals for some time, and their presence should mean Newcastle Racecourse enjoys a bumper crowd on Saturday. Dual Champion Hurdler Buveur D’Air absolutely hacked up in last year’s renewal, but he certainly won’t be a 1/6 shot this year against last year’s Neptune Investment Novices’ Hurdle winner Samcro and last year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner Summerville Boy.

Both of this second-season hurdler have massive engines as both survived significant mistakes during their races at last year’s Cheltenham Festivals but still won. Samcro has disappointed twice since though and I for one think he’ll be better over further. Meanwhile, Summerville Boy was on a steep upward curve at the end of last season, but he was still beaten three times before Christmas last season and could be better in the spring.

All times of year seem to come alike for Buveur D’Air though and, as he’s won his last 10 races, this slick hurdler is taken to take the scalps of the young pretenders.

Newbury 2.25

Whatwrongwithyou didn’t look to like Sandown when last seen in March, but he still plugged on to finish third in that competitive handicap. The handicapper also didn’t raise him on the back of that effort, so he still looks potentially well-handicapped on his beating of OK Corral over course and distance last season, and he’s two from two at Newbury. The long straight seems to suit him ideally and he’s fancied to take this before possible embarking on a chasing career.

As ever, the field for this year’s Ladbrokes Trophy contains several unexposed second-season novice chasers, though none standout as having the potential to be much better than their current handicap marks. Therefore, it could worth chancing The Young Master to continue his recent resurgent form. He’s already put together two runs of four consecutive wins and goes for a hat-trick of wins this season after wins at Chepstow and Cheltenham.

He is up in class here but a mark of 139 is very workable considering he has won off a mark as high as 148, whilst he was rated 150 when unseating his rider in a past renewal of this race. He also gets in nicely at the bottom of the weights and gets plenty of weight from his rivals. It was also noticeable that both big chases on Friday’s card at Newbury where won by horses that liked to lead.

Newcastle 3.20

You have to take a chance that Bishops Road will have got over last week’s exertions at Haydock, but it looks a chance worth taking considering just how well-handicapped he looks compared to his run in last year’s Rehearsal Chase.

Second last year, he looked all over the winner until an Beware The Bear conjured up an amazing late rally, and Bishops Road is 7lb lower in the handicap this time and has significantly less weight to carry. The booking of Robbie Power to do the steering could also bring about some improvement.
