The Chipchase Stakes (Newcastle 2.00pm) is a 6-furlong. group-3 sprint for 3-year-olds and older. This year’s renewal has 9 runners, and here’s our analysis and big-race tip.
Won a listed race at Haydock last year, but no show in three group-3’s afterwards, and difficult to make a case for on all known form.
Last year’s winner is back to defend his crown. He is top-rated, and showed his wellbeing with a good-looking 4th over 5-furlongs at Haydock on his seasonal appearance. The stable has had 19 consecutive losers though, and last year’s renewal was a weaker race.
Easter Impact 8/1
Won good handicap off 104, but didn’t look to step-up his game upped in class at Windsor last time. Trainer Richard Fahey has won the race twice in the last 10 years, and a course winner.
That Is The Spirit 12/1
All wins over 7-furlongs and doesn’t look like he’ll obviously appreciate the step-down in trip.
Got some very good form with the likes of Limato, but was very disappointing on his last run.
Got plenty to find on ratings with a few of these, but has twice won at Newcastle over 5-furlongs. Thought to need 6-furlongs now, this course could see him find some improvement. The only horse older than 4 in the field, and such horses have won 5 of the last 10 renewals.
17th of 18th in this year’s 2,000 Guineas, but looked outpaced over 6-furlongs at Haydock behind some of today’s rivals.
A case can be made for him on his defeat of New Providence last year, though his trainer William Haggas seems to have gone quiet this week after a golden spell.

Whilst Danzeno looks to have an obvious chance, I like the fact that Aetna has won twice over a shorter trip here, and could relish the extra furlong of this race – and he looks the value bet.
1 point each-way Aetna @ 16/1 (Coral) ¼ odds 1-2-3
